A Really Big Problem With Exporting in Davinci Resolve 15

PostThu Sep 20, 2018 7:03 pm

My name is Josh and these are the specs of my computer:
16 GB RAM
Core i7 processor
Intel graphics card
windows 10 home
and I'm running Davinci Resolve 15.1

So I was editing a 4k project in resolve and after I used a LUT after the edit was finished. After that I went to export with these settings:
format-Quicktime
Codec-h.264
Resolution-3840 by 2160 Ultra HD
quality-best

sounds good right? Well after it finished exporting I looked at the finished product and many of the clips were full of grain and completely ruined. It was unusable because of the weird artifacts and distortion. This is a major problem and I really need a fix soon. I don't know if this is an issue with my system or Davinci Resolve itself but it needs to be resolved ;). All jokes aside though, I really need help.

Welcome to the club! So many problem rendering. What I have been doing is render to mxf and then using something else to render to h264.

Quicktime H264 encoding on windows was always substandard. Now that Apple dropped support on Windows it has taken a turn for the worst. To be avoided. Use MP4 or MXF.

Impossible to diagnose for sure from a distance, but the 960m is not adequate for work in Resolve, least of all 4K, and the chances are excellent that the same is true of the unspecified intel GPU of the OP.

Those are my specs and I render in 1080p, but when something works in release 15 and then stops working in 15.1 then you have to wonder? Is it my graphics card?

I don't think so.

Change the Format to MP4 and try again. Report back.

I had troubles today trying to export 1080p XAVC from a 1080p timeline. I kept getting the following error "recording failed with error feature is not implemented"

I ended up having to export using the youtube MP4 setting. Also... I just upgraded to 15.1.

Free or Studio? There are quite a few differences regarding codecs…

Yep, I'm also having loads of problems with Delivery in 15.1. All codecs appear to be affected in one form or another. The reported bitrate in Windows Explorer is shockingly low no matter what codec and settings I pick. I've managed to get as high as 8000kbps with 1080p uncompressed, DNxHD, DNxHR, MP4, Quicktime. MXF seems to be the only one that isn't crippled at the moment.

Rendering a 5.1 output gets even better with each different codec jumbling up the channels in different ways. I'm going to raise a separate thread for my observed issues, but just wanted to +1 your problems.

I always render DNxHD 444 or DNxHR 444 out of Resolve then re-encode using Handbrake when H264 is needed.

Those two codecs seem to be the only ones that are reliable via Quicktime for Windows. And, unfortunately, H264 rendering in Resolve was always under expectations no matter how high I pushed the settings (except in one of the 15 beta versions when it worked nicely for one subversion).

If you want to try this workflow make sure you use Handbrake 0.10.3.0 as that's one of the latest that still supports 320 AAC (FDK).

Another workable option is to re-encode using Adobe Media Encoder if you already have it installed.

Just as an observation, I have no problems rendering HD or UHD .mov h264 video at 70000kbps. This is using free version 15.1.0023 with a Nvidia GTX 750ti GPU. System details in my sig.

Don't use Quicktime for Windows. It's insecure and has been unsupported by Apple for a very long time.

Exporting does seem to be problematic. For a long time MXF is the only way to go.

On 15.1.1 however, it doesn't seem to be rendering at the selected bitrate. No mater what I select I get HD@HQ instead of HD@SQ. I tried three different selections so far they all rendered the exact same size, and reported identically with Mediainfo.

In about 25 minutes I'll know if 15.1.2 is different. I'll report back if 15.1.2 exhibits different behavior.

I see a couple users mention staxrip or handbrake, neither one of them would open the mxf for me....at least not the one at HD@HQ. Haven't tried others yet.
