[Bug] Background merge causes immediate crash in 15.x Linux

PostSat Sep 22, 2018 2:55 pm

Added a small 2k6@30fps clip...opened it in Fusion tab....
Then added a background and a paint tool..

When now merging the paint tool to MediaIn Resolve Studio crashes immediately...

I am still wondering why the "beta" was removed from Davinci Resolve (Studio) 15...

With DRS 15.1.0.25 on macOS 10.12.6 it is just fine....doesn't crash...but spinning wheel for a few seconds after merging...

The more I use it the more I hate Resolve Studio (o;

Crashes also immediately on Linux:

version 15.0.1.003
version 15.0.0.086

I hardly guess that this is also the cause that all jayaretv title templates crash under Linux as well...

And it still crashes the application with version 15.1.1.005!!!

Will the Linux version ever work as promised?

Tried another approach...which still crashes of course :-)

Did a merge with the merge node and not with dragging a line between two outputs...

As soon as I connect then the merge output to MediaOut1 the program crashes...

If your signature specs are correct then:

I am still wondering why people try using unsupported distros and wonder why the software isn't functioning correctly.

An answer like this I have expected :-)

People don't buy a software and afterwards build a PC and install a Linux OS which mostly nobody uses...
Besides...Resolve is built with Qt5....which actually doesn't care about a distro...

I have many Qt5 software running on Debian 9 and Ubuntu 18 which never caused any problems...

I should change this to "background merge" and not "paint merge"...

In the screenshot I have merged a background to MediaIn1 with MediaOut1 disconnected...

As soon I connect the merge output to MediaOut1 the application crashes...

So homehow "background" node is involved....

Back after long time doing blender stuff (o;

Seems the crash is caused by GPU inside Fusion...

When adding the background node, setting its GPU settings to "none", DRS doesn't crash on CentOS 7, Debian 9 and Ubuntu 18.

As soon you enable GPU for the background node, Resolve crashes immediately on all three Linux distress...

Here's the video when using GPU "auto":

And here when first switching GPU off:

Both videos were done under CentOS 7 for all those who say "use a supported platform" (o;

Some feedback from BMD support...

As expected they can't replicate this crash ;-)

Can Linux users here post their GPU and driver version used where this crash also happens?

It looks like it is some GPU/driver version issue here...

And when you disable GPU in the background node settings?

And you have no other issues with Resolve on Linux or do you use another OS or NLE?

I have also replicated this crash on Linux Mint 18.3, just to provide another datapoint. I haven't got around to learning fusion yet but found resolve to be pretty reliable lately in the other pages.
System details below.

Thanks for the feedback...

And when you disable GPU for the background node? Does it crash as well?

I just hope to put some more pressure onto BMD as this issue has nothing to do not running on obsolete CentOS.

No crash if i disable GPU for the background node.

I dont use other OS since v15.
I chose BMD because it supported linux, which I use for many, many years now. I did some tests with a Hackintosh but I find it slower and not as convenient for me.
I'm just hoping now that BMD will do something to fix that. It has allowed us the use sound without external card (Decklink) with the v15, so I trust them ;-)

Indeed Resolve on Linux runs faster....I get many "beachballs" when running it under macOS...though hardware is almost identical...

Did a fresh install of DaVinci-Resolve-Linux-15.1-CentOS_7.3.iso on a spare SSD...
Interestingly I don't get a crash...with nvidia 390.42 driver...

Also installed the same driver on Debian 9, but didn't change anything...

Going now a little deeper...gdb returns:

Like davorin, as soon as I create a background node and attempt to render it (by connecting it or puting it on a viewer), Davinci Resolve crashes with the above trace.

It happens only when I choose CUDA. When selecting OpenCL, I do not have this issue, but I get another blocking issue (almost anytime I attempt to play somethings, the GUI Thread get stuck after playing 2-3 frames, and eat 100% of the CPU, and I need to kill it, but it's off topic here, and see the disclaimer below anyway.)

Disclaimer: I'm far from running the required hardware and software: Debian Buster, i7 3770 (non K), 16GB, GTX670 2GB, driver 390.87. I understand that I'm well below the requirements. (I'm in the process of upgrading everything.) However, few days ago, before upgrading my distribution and upgrading Davinci Resolve (15.1 -> 15.2) I was able to fully use it without any glitches (for small tests and some fusion effects, following various tutorials, in 2K and 4K). I think I was using OpenCL at the time (before I got the other issue mentioned above.)

I would be happy to provide more details if necessary, if it make sense given my configuration.

Re: [Bug] Background merge causes immediate crash in 15.x Li

I forgot to mention some details.

I'm using the Free version of Davinci Resolve 15.2, on a dual monitor setup (2560x1440 + 1920x1080) but also tried by booting with only the 2560x1440 one. I have a P8Z77-V DELUXE motherboard (I doubt it matter, but given that the Linux distribution might not be the issue, I'm trying to imagine which common factor remain).

CPU flags: (I think I enabled the VT-d virtualization option in the BIOS for my CPU, reported as vmx here, which is off by default)

Code: Select all

Also, it seems that there are other similar reports of this bug:

Assuming BlackMagicDesign cares about this bug, here is some extra details gathered while exploring the crashed process. (I'm really motivated to get it working.)

Analyzing the code corresponding to the back trace shown in an earlier post, it seems that we have a function that looks roughly like the following:

Code: Select all
??* functionAtFrame8(??* arg1, ??* arg2, arg3, script, arg5, ...) {
    if (functionThatCauseTheCrash(arg2, arg3, script, arg5)) {
        arg2->vfunction1(arg1, arg2, "LUTApplicator", "RTApplicator");
        <??> value = function(*arg2);
        value->vfunction2(value, "DVIP_RT_KernelName", arg3);
        function3(... "DVIP_RT_KernelSource" ...);
        function4(... "DVIP_RT_UpdateCache" ...);
        ...
    }
    return arg1;
}

The function functionAtFrame8 is called (in frame 9) by a function that seems to do:

Code: Select all
functionAtFrame9(...) {
    ...
    functionAtFrame8(..., ..., ..., Fusion::ScriptVal::ToString(...), ...);
    ...
}

At frame 2 (not long before the crash), the function use the string "ProgramKey", if that can help.

Well, I could go further but I'm not sure it would be worth the effort. I can provide a coredump if someone at BMD wants to analyze it.

Honestly?

I've given up on BMD support...been now a month since I submitted crash details including backtrace...
and they only accepted it since I could prove that the exact crash happens also on CentOS7, famous for their obsolete kernel and packages...

Since then I also didn't touch Resolve Studio just for a quick test with 15.2.

I assume they are occupied with how to implement RTX support after their bold announcement, which I still don't see what it is all about...or even the bolder eGPU product with the old RX570 GPU ;-)

Still Resolve is a great video editor, but you don't need the paid version as Fusion is still buggy, and was confirmed by BMD here that it takes until August 2019 to have all sorted out.

Currently I've spent more time with Blender and put some money into Octane as I am into 3d compositing. And with Blender you also get 3d camera tracking for free, whereas with Resolve you need the paid version. Though both are using the open source OpebCV project for it ;-)

We just need to keep pushing BMD to take Linux users more serious who don't want to use their selfbaked CentOS distro as we like to use other up to date software as well, which is impossible with CentOS.

And hey, BMD was able to release a Debian version for their MediaExpress software, so why not Resolve?
Even the old Fusion 9 installs and runs fine on Debian.

If a software is released as free or for US$ 299 I just don't the need for buying a bloody expensive Supermicro Dual-Xeon machine just to be acknowledged by BMD support....

So back to Blender GTX1080TI GPU rendering ;-)

Ok. I persevered. I didn't want to give up. I found a fix.

In my case, all that is needed is just a symlink for /usr/lib64 !

It's easy, but it took me a while to figure it.

Code: Select all
# Tested with Debian Buster
# First make sure that you don't have a /usr/lib64 on your system.
# In my case, I had some files in /usr/lib64 that belonged to DaVinci Resolve
# that I simply removed (because it was pretty obvious that the file didn't matter).
# Not sure if it was from an older installation, or simply the current installer
# adding files here.
ln -s /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu /usr/lib64

Surprisingly it's all that's needed to make the background node works in Fusion... Crazy.

I'm happy. If it stays stable, I will buy the Studio version :D

I'd like to know if other people who had crashes with the background node in Fusion when using CUDA as the engine, got it working too with this fix.

Another way to fix it, but only if the symlink is not possible (because it would clash with another package for instance), is to run Resolve with something like the following command:

Code: Select all
sudo unshare --mount sh -c 'mount -o bind /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu /usr/lib64; sudo -u <you> /opt/resolve/bin/resolve'

This wil basically make the application (and only this one) believe that /usr/lib64 is the same as /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu.

Hi, I may be experiencing a bug related to this but the proposed solution didn't help me.

So, here is my bug report.
I ran into an issue whenever I use anything related to Fusion in DaVinci Resolve 15.2.2 that I've installed using makeresolvedeb 15.2.2-1 on Ubuntu 18.10 with kernel 4.20 and AMD ROCm driver.
The same happens with amdgpu-pro. The same happens on different kernels and the same happens on Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 18.10.

Whenever I put any Fusion title or use any Fusion effect on the timeline in the edit pane Resolve crashes. I don't get any preview of the title or effect, the prerendering bar above it is red and it does not turn blue at all nor it renders the effect, that part stays black in the preview.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Launch DaVinci Resolve
2. Create new "Untitled Project"
3. Drag any Fusion title on the timeline like Text+
4. Position the timeline cursor anywhere before the title effect
5. Click play preview button
6. When the timeline cursor gets to the fusion title Resolve should crash, if not repeat step 4. and 5. a few times and it should crash but in any case, the title should not be visible or rendered in the preview as in my case

I've linked all the info because it wouldn't fit otherwise.

Can anyone provide more insight on why this is happening to me? Thank you all!

P.S. is there an official place to report bugs?

Regarding my solution (adding a symlink), it works only when using CUDA (thus only for NVidia cards). When I use OpenCL, I get the same behavior as you (the application crashes after 1 or 2 attempts).

Hmm...this

Code: Select all
sudo unshare --mount sh -c 'mount -o bind /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu /usr/lib64; sudo -u <you> /opt/resolve/bin/resolve'

really works for me under Debian 9 ;-)
