Resolve Studio alternatives?

Evnin' (o;

I know many like me are frustrated about the latest release, especially Linux users...
Did you already pick an alternative video editor or are thinking about it?

To me only Lightworks and HitFilm are popping into my mind...especially Hitfilm pro as it contains mocha tracker whereas Davinci uses OpenCV...

Adobe is anyway out of question due to their heavy and clumbsy interface...

Or do you believe version 15 will be one day usable? How long did it take for version 14?

Sorry to ask...but since I bought version 15 I only experienced GPU errors and application crashes on Linux...

PS: Anyone want to buy my dongle? (o;

Use version 14, is full working with your dongle.

Baselight is a terrific alternative to Resolve in terms of color. And it starts at only $80,000.

yes -- baselight is indeed the solution, which i still very interested as well, but its free student edition is unfortunately only available on mac os. but i'm rather sure, it's even worth to test drive such a kind of extremely limited training version to learn a lot and afterwards see the other solutions with different eyes.

mistika insight is a very similar case. this feature limted training edition is also only available on mac os and windows, but licenses for strict non-commercial use of mistika for linux are negotiable on a case by case base. it's a really impressive software, which isn't always the most intuitive or easy to grasp solution, but on the other hand you'll find unique approaches and perfomance, which you'll later miss in any other software.

autodesk flame is another professional choice on linux, which is at least freely available, if you are student or working at an educational institution.

perhaps the closest alternative -- especially, if you are unhappy with the actual state of fusion -- may be seen in nuke non-commercial. as the naming of this edition already signifies, it's much more restricted in its license terms than the free version of resolve, but nevertheless it's rather usable concerning its actual feature set. it's a much more composition oriented solution, but a very impressive and mature one.

the free natron tries to mimic some of the compositing parts of nuke rather close, but it's still missing important features and works much slower. nevertheless it has some other very important advantages over all this other mentioned commercial alternatives -- e.g. you can use nearly any ffmpeg supported file format in any arbitrary resolution, and it works really reliable using state of the art image processing, which nearly no other open source software provides.

although any of this alternatives has its strong sides, i wouldn't see them as convincing alternatives or replacements for resolve. they are just other tools, which often complement each other at best. resolve maybe the easiest to use and undeniable provides a very efficient base for editorial work and color grading [especially on linux, where we do not have much other satisfaying NLE-like choices] -- and for sure, it's also the most affordable commercial product --, but for compositing and audio-mixing i personally still prefer nuke and ardour much more. they are not so much better by objective measures, but i somehow also like to stay independent and enjoy the quality of more specialized tools. open exchange and compatibility between different applications is therefore a criteria, which i often appreciate more than a boundless growth of features.

yes -- if you are on windows, there are a view more options available. i can only describe the few linux choices.

DR 14 is pretty damned stable for me and isn't missing any of the DR15 functions that I want/need (I use the stand-alone version of Fusion Studio).

As you can see from my .sig, I'm also unconvinced that DR15 is "prime-time ready" for anyone whose time is money so I'm sticking with 14 until I see fewer of the same bugs being complained about time and time again (and no, I'm not talking about the folks who are trying to run on Win7 or who don't have the latest graphics drivers).

Just because DR15 has been released doesn't mean that DR14 has suddenly stopped working or has lost any of its own functionality.

I'm a very happy Davinci Resolve (V14) user :-)

But how to get it ? Clicking on the 'Now Available for Download' button on this page does nothing:

http://www.digitalvision.tv/single_page/nucoda_2017/

And according to this it's pending release:

http://www.digitalvision.tv/w/index.php?title=NucodaAcademy:Main

Mind you that page is dated 5th July.

Are you seriuosly complaining that the Resolve Linux builds don't work on your unsupported Ubuntu and Debian systems?

The 15.1.1 release has been pretty good for our Supermicro systems.

And here we go again ;-)

I did a fresh install of CentOS just to be sure that it also crashes the same way as on Debian 9 and Ubuntu 18....

So nothing to do running on an unsupported platform ;-)

PS: Supermicro? Haven't they been in the press lately due to implanted surveillance chips? (o;

Not sure if they are helpful....at least you don't see any when runnng from shell....

But I opened a thread a while ago here: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=79680

Don't get me wrong....I very like the workflow...but I just wished BMD would open Fusion Studio for Resolve Studio dongle users...

Meanwhile I installed macOS 10.13.6 on the system ;-)

Maybe as a side note (o;

In the past I developed web and db apps for a major ISP here...and they were mostly using RedHat or CentOS....was a nightmare due to their old Linux kernels and lack of up to date updates of the software packages....stuff worked great on Debian but failed due to older package versions on CentOS ;-)

The trend is now that most major companies switched to Debian packages due to security reasons....
Many just deliver install applications like Xilinx or Altera....works out of the box.....only in rare cases you need to manually install libpng12 (o;

And since Resolve is written in Qt5 there is no bloody excuse to force people to install an old, unsecure Linux.....I am running many Qt5 apps here...and no one states it needs CentOS...

C'mon...CentOS is still using kernel 3.x

You do realize that Red Hat backports security and bug fixes to the 3.20 kernel, right?

No one cares what other companies are doing. The Blackmagic team uses RHEL/CentOS and that's all that is supported.

You didn't even bother to upload crash logs, how do you expect people to help you?

i hope, you have already heard at some point, that linux is a FREE operating system...
most experienced linux users really like this simple fact and prefer to work on more satisfaying and up to date systems for good reason.

Hmmm, to be candid-- a number of us enthusiasts here remain perplexingly chagrined that Resolve development is devoid of some keen advances some notable other Linux flavors would have afforded us, even if we sit relatively silent in our consternation. ;-)

Chip has certainly got a salient point *there!*

Another thing you could do is just settle down, troubleshoot your system, make sure it meets all the hardware requirements, and do a fresh install from scratch. Many of us use Resolve every single day of the week (either 14 or 15), and we make a pretty good living out of it. I was just mentioning to a friend of mine I've had exactly one crash in Resolve 15 over a 1-week period, roughly 80 hours of near-continuous use. And for all I know, the crash was an OS problem, not a Resolve problem.

I think 15.1 is very stable, at least the color, editing, and conform portions. I think Fusion and Fairlight are in the process of being refined, but they do work to a point.

Linux is an ornery beast in that the system requirements are extremely specific (even the types of Linux supported), and you have to go with it fairly strictly. But I've used both daVinci 2K and Resolve (and Baselight) under Linux and it's been absolutely rock-solid and bullet-proof.

I am sure we have vastly different hardware (I am using a 2015 macbook pro), but I am running 15 on Ubuntu with no problems.

My philosophy is to follow the guidelines set by the Blackmagic Team, and then proceed to rack up billable hours on the working machine. Not trying to come across as rude, but I don't understand why people try to deviate from the recommended CentOS/RHEL system builds and then proceed to complain when it doesn't work. Blackmagic does a fantastic and thorough job with the Resolve Configuration guide, I'm just surprised more people don't use it.

I have to say, the config guide is not exactly a suggestion... this is pretty much etched in stone what you MUST do in order to get Resolve to run optimally. Resolve is a demanding program in terms of supported OS and hardware, and if you follow that to the letter, it's actually an amazing, reliable program. I just did a continuous 12-hour session today with zero crashes, no hesitations, no malfunctions at all (final trim of a 90-minute feature delivering this morning). And it was not a simple job, with roughly 1500 cuts and all kinds of tracked windows, fiddly little fixes, etc.

Sorry for late reply.....being busy with 3D renderings with blender (o;

Hmm...I did mention that for testing I did wipe my NVMe and installed CentOS and DRS 15.1.1 and it still crashed every time the same way like on Debian and Ubuntu? ;-)

Open a clip in Fusion....add a background node...draw a line from the background ouput to MediaIn1 node...it draws quickly a merge node...and a second later the application closes without notice...also on CentOS.

As I mentioned before I installed macOS 10.13.6 on it now ;-)

A good question. In my opinion for color grading it is the best software. I was using Premiere for more than a decade. then switched to resolve also for cutting. But i switched back to PP because i feel more like a beta tester than working on my projects. the newer the releases the more issues i had. Was more work to get solutions to get resolve work than spending in my projects. I really hate the pricing system from adobe. Resolve is awsome what you will get compared to the price. I never will say that resolve is not a good software. It is but since they add more and more features i.e. fuse i had more and more problems.

Seems you're working on macOS like I now (o;

On macOS I had less issues...but DRS feels snappier on Linux, and I can accept the fact Linux is missing h.264...
The GPU RAM issues seems to be gone since 15.1.0 but no word about it in the release notes...

I went away from Adobe Cloud as I never used all programs, just Illustrator, Photoshop and MediaEncoder, which are now replaced by Affinity Designer/Photo on macOS and kdenlive on Linux...

My biggest wish is to be able to run Fusion Studio with my Resolve Studio dongle....or find someone which gives me a Fusion dongle for my Resolve dongle (o;

Also..what is the purpose of registering when downloading a new version? I never got any email when a new release came out...so I check from time to time the support site to see if something happened (o;

As a last note...I really like the work flow with nodes inside Fusion, and for video cutting/editing Resolve Studio is the best in my opinion...and maybe 3d stuff will improve in the future with the RTX2080 Ti RT cores (o;

Now back to Blender 3d compositing learning with LuxCore bidir raytrace renderer (o;

If you have a studio there is a convenient "download only" button that skip registering.

Just wondering what the purpose is of registering your software with serial number if you never get per email information on updates (o;
