Hi! Looking to do some coloring work on 1080 full HD output. I live in a tiny apartment and prefer working outside in coffee shops and co-working spaces. Any recommendations on a laptop that would run Da Vinci adequately?

My options so far are:
Asus ROG GL502VM Gaming Laptop [GTX 1060][i7-7700HQ][16GB RAM][128GB SSD][1TB HD][GSYNC] Thunderbolt
Windows 10

or a

Acer Predator Helios 300
15.6” 60Hz FHD Display
Intel Core i7-7700HQ
NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB
16GB DDR4 RAM
256GB SSD

any other recommendations? Should I just pay the extra few bucks and go for the Dell XPS 15 with the 1050nvidia video card?

Thank you for your help!

I have the Acer Predator Helios 300, I've had it about a year. I upgraded the HD's and added another 16 GB RAM, but it's base configuration is good. I would recommend at least getting the RAM up to 32 GB, especially if you will be using Fusion.

Hi.

In Resolve the CPU is used to run the app, disk I/O and compression and decompression of codecs.
Resolve does all its image processing in the GPU on the graphics card. More CUDA/OpenCL Cores are better.

And I'm not convinced a laptop is ideal for Resolve. And in the DaVinci Resolve 15 Configuration Guide:

http://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/D ... _Guide.pdf

On the lower parts of page 19 is written about laptops. Under both HP and DELL is written, but it is valid for all laptops: 'While performance for many applications and UHD resolutions will be limited'.

So long you don't expect that you can do the same thing on a laptop as on a desktop, can I give the following advice.

Buy one with as power full Graphics Card as possible. More CUDA cores are better. I don't know what kind of codec and format you expect your source to be in?
But compression and decompression of codecs are done in the CPU. Some months ago did Intel introduced 6 cores mobile CPU's. They are 40-50%faster that the previous 4 cores CPU's.
I don't know your locale prices, but Intels price is only 20-30$ more for a 6 core i7-8750H CPU than the previous 4 core CPU. So I expect a 6 core Laptop to be in the same price range as a 4 core Laptop?

Normally I recommend laptops in a medium to large size, to get rid of the generated heat.

Finally I cant recommend the Dell XPS 15 9570 with Core i7-8750H. According to this link is it not optimized for max performance.

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-XPS- ... 738.0.html

What the link is telling is that customers buying the Dell with the i7-8750H think that they buy the performance of the i7-8750H, but they don't. The pay the price of the i7-8750H, but got less performance.

Regards Carsten.

Hi! Thank you for your comment! It helps a lot! One question though, my only issue with the Predator Is that it has no thunderbolt port. That’s why I was leaning towards the ROG since I can suplement it a bit in the future with a Egpu. Do you think it’s going to be an issue in the future?

I am using

Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop
Intel i7-10750H
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6GB
15.6" Full HD 144Hz 3ms IPS Display
16GB Dual-Channel DDR4
512GB NVMe SSD
Model: PH315-53-72XD

It works brilliant with Da Vinci
