Resolve 15 - LUTs or Stills

PostThu Oct 18, 2018 8:21 am

Hi,
I'm not a pro and I'm not very good either. I am in love with Resolve and have some need for knowledge matching. LUT or (Node) stills. I have created my own CineD LUT in color space and they work wonderfully. I have created a Node series and saved them as stills in the Gallery. When using on other clips from - the same camera, location and date - I get with both solutions satisfactory results.
Now my amateur question. Where is the difference and is there anyway? For me, LUT has a wide field of application (NLE third party) - whereas stills are project specific.
And then, my test material was 4K / 10bit / CineD.
Thanks for any answer.
Regards Hansi

LUTs only save the remapped colors that result from your corrections and grades you do. The stills you save have the whole node tree within them an can be reapplied within Resolve. You can also just pick some of the nodes from a still etc. LUTs also cannot save certain corrections like powerwindows.

also the luts are destructive,
- they will clip and crush values out of range on input and cannot be recovered
- they can (and often do) create banding and math errors that are destructive and cannot be recovered

powergrades do not have these limitations (as long as clippers are not used)

I have the opposite opinion: LUTs will only work with very specific kinds of material, whereas a PowerGrade can be used for a lot of different things depending on how it's built.

BTW, there is a new set of PowerGrades being demonstrated this week at the LACPUG, and I think these will be very useful for Resolve users. Some of them are utilities that enhance what you already have, while others actually create entirely new looks completely from scratch. All are modifiable and customizable to get different results with different kinds of shots.

Marc, the way I understood him was only about the technical ability tu use LUTs in other programms, whereas PG are Resolve's inner tweaks.

Anyway I widely prefer powergrades too for every destructive reasons written above + the fact that you can apply them and substract a couple of nodes afterwards if needed, this gives a lot more flexibility to your work.

I recently tried to save a still of a compound node. It saved, but does not work to copy and paste it into a node on another clip. Is it possible to do this? I want to save some compound nodes and apply them elsewhere when desired.

Didn't check very deep however it seems to work : i can grab a still from the compound node, apply it or append it
