AVI vs MOV

PostSun Oct 21, 2018 2:41 pm

I read an article by GoPro saying if you're using CineForm in Mac environments use .mov if windows use use .avi

I won't go so far as claiming a bug or anything, just reporting a wide performance gap.

DNxHD (rendered by premiere 290 bit rate)> AVI YUV 10 bit - about 55 fps. All system resources had 60-70% of headroom.

Same DNxHD file > MOV YUV 10bit - Peaks at around 225 fps. Averages about 190. Storage format is definitely the limiting factor on this one. My NVM's aren't big enough to hold the source or target.

Is the AVI wrapper really that poorly written or is there a problem with DR?

I have yet to get DNx out of resolve at less than the 440 bit rate for 15.1.1 and 15.1.2. Lost track on earlier versions, I should start a spreadsheet tracking render outputs since it clearly is a problem that needs watched.

In the advanced section there is a Render Quality option I always set to Best. But the codec sub type I chose indicates best should be around 275 bit rate.

Do I understand correctly that you're exporting out of two different programs here? AVI out of PP, and MOV out of Resolve?

No

Source material rendered by premiere. Imported into Resolve for some audio work.

I have just been trying to find the best codec for long term storage of the completed project.

I was hoping to make that final render out of Resolve and have been testing various delivery methods.

The only change between those two examples is the wrapper.

Got it.

I am seeing the same thing here. Exporting Cineform to AVI offers about 1/3 of the speed as to MOV.

Not happy about that, since my preferred encoding software won't work with MOV.

This is very strange as container should not really affect performance, specially when Cineform in Resolve is a low level integration and I'm almost sure both AVI and MOV are written by libav libraries.
