Unable to see or import wav files in Media Window

PostMon Oct 22, 2018 12:00 pm

Hi there,

We have just finished principal photography on our feature shooting on an URSA Mini Pro using Blackmagic Raw and a Zoom F8 audio recorder. All is well from the URSA side of things, in fact amazing, but when trying to navigate to the audio files recorded by the Zoom in the Media Window any folder containing a wav file simply cannot be seen. This is true on both Mac and PC versions of DaVinci Resolve.

I don't have this issue in any other NLE so was wondering what the deal is?

Many thanks.

DaVinci Resolve version 15.1.2.

Can you drag and drop wave files from explorer/finder into the media page?

I would use a free 3rd-party WAV utility like Sound Devices' Wave Agent to inspect the WAV file and see what's going on with it. It's possible it may be at some weird frame rate or sampling frequency that Resolve doesn't like. If the timecode matches the project and it's a normal 48Khz/24-bit file, it should just drop right in.

Wave Agent can also play the file, and that may also provide a clue as to whether the file is actually good or if there's some kind of corruption there.

No problem dragging and dropping from the Finder/Explorer directly, and there is nothing wrong with any of the actual wav files themselves. I simply cannot navigate to them or even see them in the Media Storage window. Which is weird.

I've attached a couple of images to show you what I mean.

This was not too hard to spot... ;)

I tested it out and it would seem that DaVinci does not like certain folder name formats. It is the .WAV bit that it doesn't like, probably because it doesn't correctly differentiate folders and files, and cannot make sense of a folder with an apparent extension of .wav. If you rename the folders, it works fine...

Maybe something still for BM to address sometime.

Thanks Glenn, you nailed it. I've renamed the folders and it now works perfectly.

Hi,

I just read these posts, hoping that would give me a solution for my unability to import a wave file to my media pool but nope.

I checked everything I could think of. I have a wave file called voice 1, 48 kHz 16 bits but no matter how I try it just doesn't show up in my media pool. Can someone help me please?

Thank you!

Would be glad to help if I can. Firstly, it is always good when you post on these forums to list your system specs and software version. Also, it is useful to provide as much detail of your issue as you can, preferably in such a way as we might be able to reproduce it. Finally, if it is a new problem, better to start a new thread with your own title, if you haven't already done so.

Having said all that, can you describe what you are doing, such as: 'dragging the file from a folder straight into the media pool window', or what? Do other files show up okay? Are you able to upload your wav file?

I understand it is frustrating, but more detail will give a higher chance of an issue being solved.

Hi,

thank you for answering me. It is my first time posting anything in a forum and it is my first time using Davinci Resolve too.

I have tried everything, importing through Davinci Resolve 16, dragging directly from my folder... nothing works. I also started the project again and it doesn't work either. I even changed the name of the file in case the ".wav" was creating a problem but it didn't change anything. I am afraid there might be a problem with my file but I have no idea how to check it.

Hi again,

So, first thing is, I take it, there is just one file that you are having problems with. If so, one thing you can try is to convert the file to a different format. If you do not have a program for this, then you can always do it on-line, using something like: https://online-audio-converter.com/ (there are many other sites if you search Google). Try converting it to an MP3, and then import the resultant file into Davinci Resolve.

Let me know if that works...

Hi,

thanks again for answering. Indeed it is that one file that drives me crazy. I have tried as an mp3, as an m4a, and wav and it never works... :'(
Weirdly it works when I try it with iMovie...

thanks again!

Yes, I guess sometimes, a media file may become corrupted at some point, perhaps in initial creation, such as when it is created by a source application that uses additional proprietary internal file structures and information, and this 'sometimes' will be incompatible with 'some' software applications.

Surprisingly, players and cheaper video creation software tends to be 'less fussy' and may accept corrupted/modified formatted files, where as professional software, while we may hope is more robust, tends to require higher standards of input so as to not introduce issues later in the production-path.

Anyway, I hope you have found a way around it and best of luck with your future productions...

Cass.

I found this query as the result of a Google search, as I had the same issue. I tried opening the wav file in Audacity (free audio software) and exported it as a wav file. It then loaded straight into Davinci resolve no problem.
