Choosing CPU for PC build

PostSat Dec 15, 2018 4:23 pm

Hello everyone!

I am going to build a Ryzen 8-core machine and initially I was thinking going with 2700x, but after some research I decided to try and go with previous gen 1700 which is 100$ cheaper and easily overcloked to 3.8-3.9 Ghz.

Will there be any significant difference in performance with Resolve via 1700 vs 2700x?

My GPU will be GTX1070

I thought that if performance difference is negligible, I would prefer to put this 100$ in some other things or just wait for 12\16-core 37xxx Ryzen series , something with distinguishable difference in performance.

Your thoughts?

Hi

If you don't tell what you are going to edit - is it hd, uhd or 4k - hard compres or uncompres - no one can help you !

Hi

In Resolve the CPU is used to run the app, disk I/O and compression and decompression of codecs.
Resolve does all its image processing in the GPU on the graphics card. More CUDA/OpenCL Cores are better.

Both the AMD Ryzen 1700X and the 2700X is below recommendation and you are considering the 1700. Suggest you read the DaVinci Resolve 15 configuration guide at the top af this page.

One of the main problem with the Ryzens is the current X470 motherboards. They only have only ONE full speed M.2 slot for PCIe 3.0 x4 SSD drives. And most Resolve desktop users are using more.

A few months ago there was rumors about some X490 motherboards, but they never arrived, may be due to shortage of PLEX IC's. AMD have confirmed 12\16-core 37xxx Ryzen series to be introduced on 9th January 2019 on CES.

I don't know if AMD at the same time will introduce new X570 motherboards. But I hope they will increases the number of PCIe lanes.

Regards Carsten.

And many people are happily using far less powerful CPUs than the 1700x. It really depends on what he intends to do. And I don't think you can say that "most" Resolve users depend on the speed edge provided by MB-based SSDs.

For the rest, since there aren't (as far as I know) published processor-benchmarks with GOP compression footage in Resolve, it will still be hard to answer with confidence. The two CPUs have a 15% performance difference on generic tests. Not likely to make much difference, regardless of format. Also, the GPU-h.264 acceleration offered by the Studio version is an unknown factor here.

Yes I plan to edit 4k footage. GH5 h264 and h265 files mostly. 4h60p as well. I am fine with 1 Nvme ssd for now. I am building miniITX PC so there is no room for Threadripper or 2 GPUs etc.

Won't run smooth.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

4K 60Hz h.265 on a miniITX? Yeah, wouldn't recommend that. Even if you just did microATX and then expanded as needed you'd be better off.

Save those $100 for the Davinci Resolve Studio version, which will use the GPU to decode the files. Otherwise, with Davinci Resolve, it is not going to play well without optimizing media first. It's a pain each time because you cannot do anything else when optimizing media(not doing it in the background).

Just did the build. Went with Ryzen 1700 oc at 3.7Ghz, no NMVe yet just regular ssd, so.. GH5 4k60p H.264 flying at its native framerate smooth as butter. Added 3 OpenFX nodes of blur, emboss and some other effect.. and only then, it showed me 57-58 fps instead of 59.96. So yeah, I am very happy with my mini ITX build overall.

Interesting. Cheers for info. May I rudely ask. Final cost? Approx even?

Sure, don't see anything rude about it.

It was around 1000$:
Raijintek metis plus
Corsair 750 watt 80 plus gold
16gig amd 3000 ddr4 ram
1 tb nvme ssd
Ryzen 1700
Some cooler for 25$
Gigabyte aorus B450 mb
Gigabyte aorus GTX1070 which I grabbed for just around 200$

And in my country everything is a bit more expensive than is US, so keep this in mind.
