Resolve Studio is crashing all the time ... need help!

Hello Davinci Experts,

i have the issue that Davinci Resolve Studio is crashing all the time. The issues happens with latest SW version but also with all previous releases.
I have tried to change several options/settings as suggested here in the forum and also upgraded the RAM to 16GB .... without success. I do not have any issue with any other video editing SW, even Adobe Premiere CC was running without any issue.

System:
Version: Davinci Resolve Studio v15.2.2.007
Windows: Windows 10 Pro 64bit with latest updates, installed on SSD
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1100T
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6800 (with OpenCL 2.0.4.0) => upgraded to: Radeon RX580 8GB (with OpenCL 25.20.15011.1004)
RAM: Upgraded to 16GB

Fault Description:
The issue can be easily reproduced even with unloaded project. I am adding one video to the timeline and start playback in EDIT tab. Then Davinci Resolve is crashing while playback or even more often at the END of the video. I have tried different videos and it does not seem to be related to the codec/resolution format.

I know that the CPU/GPU is not the newest but i am fully happy with all the tasks (even heavy re-encoding) i am doing with this system. I also do not expect speed but at least stability to use the SW. Usually i use only Full-HD as source and output and no 4k. For the moment DR Studio is completely unusable even for very simple and easy projects. Some time ago i have also used Adobe Premiere with very heavy video project on the same system (even with only 8GB) ... without any issues.

How to find out what is causing the issues? Any special settings in the options to find this out or even solve the problem? Please help me to fix the issues and get this great video editing SW running on my system.

GPU selection

For some operations 4GB will be sufficient. 2GB is not recommended.

This answer is to simple without looking at the logs.
"For some operatopns" would be acceptable in more complex scenarios.
Latest version of resolve studio is crashing (reproducable) even if one video is in the timeline.
I really doubt that this could be due to low GPU memory.

Another new issue is that resolve studio is immediately crashing when trying to load old projects (created with earlier v15 version). There seem to be some systematical issue related to my specific configuration.

Could someone from official support please have a look to provided logs?
I do not want to invest into new GPU only to test if this could solve the issue.

Well, my edition of Davinci Resolve does not break down! We have the same version of Davinci Resolve Studio - the only difference is that we don't have the same computer - so your problem is computer related and not a Davinci Resolve bug problem!

In Resolve the CPU is used to run the app, disk I/O and compression and decompression of codecs.
Resolve does all its image processing in the GPU on the graphics card. More CUDA/OpenCL Cores are better.

I wonder how much VRam your AMD Radeon HD 6800 have. 2 GB or lower is not Recommended.

It is clear that the more power ... the better.
Well designed code should never crash because of low memory.
RAM is always handled by scheduler which could result in reduced speed (e.g. fps) but it should not lead to crash.

I am able to handle very heavy hourly lasting OpenCL based GPU calculations (Photogrammetry).
I am also able to play latest racing game with high details and quite high frame rate.
And i am able to playback 4k video (h265, 30fps) without any issues on my system.

But i am not able to playback one single 1080p or 720p video from Davinci Resolve timeline without any crash after few seconds, or latest at the end of the video. There is no special effect, fading, audio or whatever. One single video in the timeline, nothing else.

There is some fundamental issue leading to the crashes which should be analyzed. And if the SW is working on some other HW does not mean that issues could be SW related. Latest issues with "Resolve no longer starting up" have been notified only on some specific AMD CPU's which was introduced from one v15 correction release to another. If you do not have this AMD CPU you are simply not impacted by the issue ... finally the issue was solved in latest SW update and now it's launching up again also with mentioned AMD CPU.

If Davinci Resolve is only designed to run on very specific HW only than this needs to be strictly mentioned. At least i would expect from support to get analysis of the provided logs with some more detailed instructions or recommendations. If final conclusion after log analysis is that GPU seem to be the root cause with some kind of professional explanation and reference to the logs .... fair enough. But i will not upgrade my system only because of assumptions and try and error approach. We talk about payed SW and not about freeware.

Due to the strong advices here in the forum i have ordered new quite powerfull GPU with 8GB VRAM (Radeon RX580) which cost me 280€. I was really confident that what you are saying is true.

But unfortunately after properly installation of the new powerfull GPU i need to realize that Davinci Resolve Studio is still crashing at the same described scenarios. Absolutlely nothing changed after spending another 280€, not mentioning the 16GB RAM upgrade i have done before.

Really frustrating that nobody from Balckmagic Support is taking the issue serious and try to professionally support rather than telling me to upgrade my HW.

Fault description:
The crash can be easily reproduced by dropping only one media to the timeline.
It does not matter if the media is video or image (jpg).
The fault is 100% reproducable!
Davinci Resolve studio (v15.2.2.007) is immediately crashing when .....
1. the timeline reaches it's end.
2. the playback of the timeline get's stopped.
3. the position marker (red line) will be moved.

Beside this i need to mention that with this latest release it is also not possible to open old projects.
When trying to load old (v15) projects DRS is also immediately crashing. Same issue is also reported here in the forum. All above described crashes are reproduced from new (blank) project with just only one media on the timeline. CPU, RAM and GPU are almost idle when the crash is happening.

Please do not ask again to extend my HW.
For me it looks like SW issue which is related to AMD CPU/GPU hardware.

Is it possible you have a version conflict where an older version was not correctly upgraded? I don't expect it to matter but it seems you once installed the Panels Setup application (which you don't need unless you use a panel), then in a later Resolve release you didn't install Panels Setup:

Anyway, since you have the Studio version you can contact the BMD customer support directly, instead of this user forum.

@ Roger: Quite interesting finding from the log even through it does not seem to solve my issues. For sure it happened before that Resolve Panels have been installed because it's activated for installation per default. Usually i am deactivating the installation of the Panels. I have re-installed latest DRS version with panels but the issue is still happening and also the panel version conflict error is still showing up. No change if re-installation is done without the Panels activated. This is really strange and seems to be another "hidden" SW bug.

Some partial success .... when downgrading to Davinci Resolve Studio v15.0.0088 i do not reallize mentioned crashes any more! Something seems to be changed in later versions which are causing the crashes.

a little bit different from my side but i have constaly problems that the GPU stops working on DaFusion and my Whole VRAM is full even if no operation is performed. Very strange behaviour on 15.2.2

Same script in Fusion tested:
Resolve 15.0.1 to with Fusion only on CPU does not Max out memory.

Same script in Fusion 9 runs on 2fps
Script in Resolve 15.0.1 to 15.2.2 runs at 5.5sec / frame.

Ridiculous and I don't know if I am the only one wirh this problem. / Windows 10 64bit

i have the same problem:
i'm beginner in DaVinci and i did couples of simple projects with Resolve v15.2.1.005.
but... suddenly... when i trying to do something in Fusion (i.g. add Blur, Tracking or other Tool) DaVinci crashes every time.
then i have upgraded Resolve to v15.2.2.007
sad...
the problem still is.
crashing after some simple actions every time


unfortunately, Resolve v15.0.0.088 not solves the problem in my case
any version of Resolve is crashing

@ Christian: There is an issue with Resolve 15.2.2 and AMD Phenom 2 CPUs. You'll need to revert to 15.2.1.

This issue should be fixed in the next point release, but to be honest, it will likely be the last effort we make to keep the Phenom 2 CPU working. I'd strongly suggest getting a system with a modern CPU sooner than later, if you want to continue using new Resolve releases.

It's better to know what are the facts rather than wasting unnecessary money (and time) for RAM and GPU extension because of the guessing about the root cause.

I think BM should make this more public so that all users with such CPU are aware about the situation.
It should be also possible to check HW capability at SW startup and inform user about unsupported HW or very low minimum requirements.
I have spent several hours troubleshooting and wasted about 350 Euro (400 USD) trying to hunt the phantom without success.

It would be fair approach to support the mentioned CPU until end of v15 and provide correction on top of v15.2.2 as mentioned. Than discontinue the Phenom 2 CPU Support for the next main release (v16). In general it's also very useful if short explanation about the reason (why the support for this CPU must be dropped) will be provided so it is more easy to accept the situation.

I fully understand that old HW cannot be supported endless.
So finally your answer was very useful and i know it's time to invest in new system very soon.
Hopefully i will be able to further use my Phenom 2 till end of DRS v15 so that latest RAM and GPU extension was not done for nothing.

Can't you show where Blackmagic recommends an AMD Radeon 680 graphics card with 1024MB memory for editing in Davinci Resolve 15?

I was usung this system since DRS v12.5 for all my projects successfully.
From one correction release to another within v15 the problems started.
It is very unlikely that requiremts are changing within one main release.
After fallback to very old v15 it is absolutely no problem to use DRS again ... i have tested this as well with my old (maybe not recommended) setup.
