Graphics Card Issue? Upgrade necessary? Recommendations?

I'm a hobbyist. Love Resolve, BTW.

I recently upgraded to 15.2.2, and got the, "DaVinci Resolve could not find any OpenCL capable GPUs" error message.

From my research here, I figure I've probably exceeded my graphics card, which is a NVIDIA GeForce GTZ 645. Is that deduction correct?

I tried installing an earlier version of Resolve (I hadn't backed up), and got the database conflict problem.

I'm guessing upgrading my graphics card is probably the best long term solution.

I've never done that before. Is it a fairly straightforward, plug-and-play sort of process?

Any recommendations on a decent card at a reasonable price? I note Amazon has the following for $190: EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti SC Gaming, 4GB GDDR5, DX12 OSD Support (PXOC) Graphics Card 04G-P4-6253-KR

Would that be a reasonable choice? Others?

Thanks!

The 1050ti should be a reasonable choice

Honestly in this price range you should get an AMD RX 580 card with 8GB of RAM, way faster than the 1050 TI with twice the RAM.

This card is even sufficient for color grading in 4K.

"This card is even sufficient for color grading in 4K."

It is probably complete 'overkill'. We work exclusively in 4K @ 25P and easily operate in Real Time on the Color page, even with the Scopes up full screen on a fourth monitor using just one old GTX970 (G1) GPU which boasts 3.5GB of VRAM (on a good day) yet we have never seen this card run beyond 60% capacity in any 4K Play or Render.

I think many of the performance issues new Resolve users experience is because they have poorly configured systems with insufficient RAM then try to use their GPU to run a large 4K 'computer' Display instead of porting this task over to a Decklink 'video' card.

IMO, reducing data bottlenecks first with a properly configured 'workstation' which may include fast RAID drives, a dedicated Cache SSD and a Decklink card to power your Full Screen display is more important than the RAM capacity of your installed GPU.

For general editing 4k, a 4 GB GPU is most of the time enough. When you also want to do noise reduction with 4k files you will need a GPU with 8 GB. Something like this https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131720, this card is also a lot faster than the 1050ti.

Filters which do some temporal processing, not only NR, but also "Scratch and Dust" and the like need more than 4 GB for 4K in my experience.

As a datapoint, I just did some very serious denoising of a 1080p/50 clip using temporal and spatial (enhanced) processing.

I have a GTX1060/6 card and it sure was slow but worked perfectly with ample memory. Processing rate was about 3-5 FPS though. It looks as if the bottleneck was actually the memory/bus bandwidth rather than the GPU or CPU because they were both only about 35% utilized the whole time.

Agree with this, and this is where you have ot get a higher end GPU.

It doens't matter if you have 128GB VRAM, if you're bottlenecking at bandwidth. The higher end cards often have 1.5-2xx the memory bandwidth of the lower-end cards.

And frankly, from experience... A 1050 Ti is practically unusable in this NLE for 4K. It will work in others, but it will be too slow to be tolerable in Resolve.

I wouldn't get anything less than a 1070... Wait for the 2060, IMHO. It should be slightly better than a 1070 Ti, for a much lower price (unless prices start inflating, again).

Radeon 7/VEGA 2 is a perfect choice when you have a budget of $700, 16 GB of HBM2 RAM and 1024 GByte/sec of memory bandwidth. That enough for 8k in 95% of the cases.

I don't understand how you can describe a card not yet released as a "perfect choice", but for $700 you can get a rtx 2080, which outperforms this one on general benchmarks, though it does have 8 rather than 16gb vram.

Also issues of heat and noise.... Do you know how they compare? Or how stable the AMD card will prove to be in Windows Resolve systems?

That is pretty easy, we have 3 VEGA FE's with 16 GB(484 GB/s) (which is enough for pretty heavy noise reduction with 8k files in Resolve) running now for 15 months. For Resolve you need fp32 power (VEGA2 has 13.8 TFlops/peak of those and enough memory bandwidth (1,024 GB/s) to feed the GPU) and memory bandwidth, our current cards are limited by memory bandwidth. The RTX2080 only has 10 TFlops/peak and 448 GB/s memory bandwidth.

In a recent test from Slashcam.de, the RTX2080 turned out to not have enough memory bandwidth https://www.slashcam.de/artikel/Test/MSI-Ventus-Geforce-RTX-2080---Beste-Grafikkarte-fuer-die-4K--8K-Videobearbeitung---Die-Performance-unter-Resolv.html#Die_P to feed the GPU fast enough.

This card checks most of the boxes.

Yep, it most certainly will blow everything away in its price class unless you want to play raytracing games at 15fps.

Well, you guys are braver than I am -- recommending equipment you haven't used and tested, which isn't in the field yet, and without reference to OP's base system.

I won't ask if you're offering refunds, if the purchase doesn't work out.

Also, the OP has a limited budget, around 150$, not 700$....

I’m glad to see I started a robust discussion but, yes, a lot of these options are out of my price range or foreseeable needs. I could justify around $200, but not much more.

I’m inclcined to conclude that the GPU is indeed the cause of my problem, and go with the AMD RX 580 card with 8GB of RAM, unless someone thinks the EVGA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (or some other board) would be a superior choice.

Thanks for everyone’s patience and generosity with your time and experience. Having grown up in the scissors and scotch tape era, I’m always awed by the complexity of modern video editing.

Hi.

I wonder how big a Power Supply John have in his PC?
And what kind of plugs it have for a new Graphics Card. Several of your suggestions will require extra
power cables from the power supply. Are you sure it have it.

Hi

What I learned over the past few years is to avoid any graphic hardware from AMD - they are mostly inefficient power hungry beasts. I exchanged all my AMD cards with Nvidia hardware and since then I never had any problems again. Stability and power efficiency is really good, drivers are rock solid and the hardware stays cool headed while delivering max performance (I used Windows 10 and now Linuxmint without any problems).

A 1050Ti is a good budget choice. Maybe you can also wait for the next coming RTX cards and hopefully a bit of price dropping then.

Just my two cents.

I'm at the same situation but I have an old GT720 and I fear its underpowered... I'm undecided if I must upgrade it to a GTX 1070 vs RX 580 for 4k 60fps for motovlogging (just waiting for the new Ryzen 3000s processors to come out!)

A small company named Apple did exactly the opposite (and so do we, not that we use apple). On the otherhand we still use a lot of intel and nvidia because braw is so low on resources that we don't have to upgrade. Looking at current and upcomming hardware (CPU and GPU) AMD is winning on all fronts.

Not my two cents but hard data.

Hi.

If you can wait for Ryzen 3000s processors to come out in mid 2019. Then you may be can wait a little longer, and also wait for the new graphics cards AMD is working on for the next PlayStation PS5? I expect them to be called Navi. I don't expect all the current rumors to be true. But we can always hope for both 7nm and PCIe version 4.0 as the Ryzen 3000.

Yeap. I'm just building my project (small ATX case Thermaltake G3) 1 piece at the time and the CPU (3600 looks cool), (maybe) GPU (very undecided!) and NVMe SSD will be the last!

I agree. 8 GB should be a minimum. Or 6 GB if you are on a budget, then the GTX1060Ti should be your choice. Maybe the prices of GTX1070 or GTX1080 drop a bit when the RTX cards are released.

I would also recommend Nvidia cards because of CUDA - with AMD you just have OpenCL, which is, afaik, less performant than CUDA.

I myself will upgrade my system with at least one of the RTX20xx as soon as possible.

The guys over at Hardware Unboxed gave the GTX2060/6 a pretty glowing review and in their tests (albeit with games) it kept up with the GTX1070Ti on many occasions -- and even the GTX1080 on some.

In fact, it only has 15% fewer CUDA cores but costs 30% less than the 2070 card (albeit the bandwidth is a little lower) so it could be another budget option for those that can't afford the real heavy iron.

Yeah, 6GB is a little small for some applications but I get by using a GTX1060/6 for mainly 1080p and the occasional 4K project with light grading and sometimes a bit of noise reduction.

anyone has tried running resolve with the mining card like P106-100?

I think they are cheap on the second hand market, is multiple cards setup working with the resolve studio version?

however, you may need to have on board display output or install another UI display card

So OpenCL on a AMD card is as fast as CUDA on a comparable Nvidia card?

I read quite the opposite to be honest. But maybe it does not make a big difference in Resolve but I'm also using other apps which rely heavily on CUDA. I guess I'll have to run my own benchmark to compare.

Do you have any AMD card which you'd compare with the RTX20x0 or higher? Performance vs. power consumption vs efficiency? The big plus for AMD seems to be the amount of memory on their cards, which is also important for Resolve.

No.

OpenCL or CUDA on the same card.

OpenCL on a VEGA FE is way faster than CUDA on a GT1030
