Resolve doesn't see cuda cores on VMWare Horizon View

PostFri Mar 22, 2019 3:39 pm

Hi,

I've installed the latest version of Resolve, and I'm presented with

DaVinci Resolve could not find any CUDA capable GPUs. Would you like to review and update your DaVinci Resolve Hardware Configuration?

However, when I go through the logs... it does see my GRID cards.. but then it doesn't... so i'm little lost here..

any help would be appreciated... I've bolded out the sections where it sees the cards and then when it doesn't to make it easier to find

My best guess is that your problem is related to you trying to run it in a VM.

Hi.

In Resolve the CPU is used to run the app, disk I/O and compression and decompression of codecs.
Resolve does all its image processing in the GPU on the graphics card. More CUDA/OpenCL Cores are better. And as I understand it, do Resolve access the hardware directly in the Graphics Card.

I will suggest you tell us more about you setup. Both VMware version and OS version both in the text and in the heading, so your VMware specialist can see your problem, and may be tell you what is possible.

I don't know what functions you want to perform in Resolve or at what resolution, but the NVIDIA GRID M60-2Q with its only 2 GB vRam is the absolute minimum for work in HD resolutions.

Guest OS is Windows 7 SP1
Vmware 6.0 U3
12 x HP Proliant DL380 Gen9 Intel Xeon CPU E5-2690 v4 @ 2.60GHz
768GB RAM
2 x Nvidia Tesla m60 in each host
EMC XtremIO Storage Array

I'm not doing anything crazy, so the 2Q profile should be ok... But the application doesn't even see the CUDA cores when setting up the GPU Config

Well...

Install Windows 10 and then Resolve on a Desktop machine. That'll work.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

Hi.

Only Windows 10 is supported for Resolve. And in Resolve each pixel in a video is converted to 32 bit resolution and RGB before it is stored in the the Graphics Cards vRam. So the 2 GB of vRam is very very low.

You will need the Paid Studio version of Resolve to use more than one Graphics Card. But even if you have the Paid Studio version of Resolve, can you not add the amount vRam in the different Graphics Cards together. Resolve will only use the lowest amount of vRam in all the available Graphics cards.

Your error message is normal for installation with Intel or AMD graphics Cards which uses OpenCL.
But I can't see how you can access the Graphics Cards Hardware from your Virtual Machine?
I expect that to be your problem.

I will again suggest you change your heading to something like Resolve don't run on VMware, as
the VMware specialist then can see, what this thread is about.

Regards Carsten.

Resolve is not designed to run on VM, no testing is done on VM, there are no current plans to consider VM.

Ps runs spectacular on vm but not every vm and has to be setup right. Key is proper native pcie bus passthru so the guest os has full control over anything plugged into that slot. Resolve wont know the difference and you have the advantage of dynamic resource allocation at will .
Running it on an qemu based vm on unraid host with dual 12 core xeon with 2 nvidia gpu’s , 10gb ether and usb3.1 cards passed thru and vcores/memory depending the job at hand. Performance of the gpus in resolve is 0.5 frames slower then in native in my setup so i call that native performance.

I have personaly not yet heard of any similarly good/working vmware based resolve setups, but your case looking at the logs and your setup could just be a matter of guest os version and its gpu / cuda drivers ( to windows 10) and the low amount of vmemory as mentioned.
So your vm has to match the recommendations of normal resolve systems.

My opinion is that this VMware setup is nonsense, but if you like to hack, trace what reg keys Resolve is querying (sysinternals has the tools) and compare with a non hypervisor environment. You might just get away with renaming you GPUs to something Resolve is used to see.

But then again, you could just use a hypervisor with proper GPU PCIe pass-through and use your limited lifetime to do something slightly more exciting than messing with VMware...
