Import WMV video (Windows)

PostSun Mar 24, 2019 1:57 pm

Hi,

I have several old videos that were encoded as WMV's that I am trying to clean up and upscale. They're not the best quality, so I am trying to avoid recompressing them until the last possible minute.

DaVinci Resolve 15 won't import WMV files, so how can I import these videos into Resolve without recompressing them into another format first?

Does Resolve support any lossless formats? If so, how would I convert my WMV's into one of those lossless formats first?

Thanks!

Try remux to mp4, if Resolve doesn't like it, reencode to lossless H264 using FFMPEG and the Nvidia encoder.

Remuxing didn't work - the remuxer crashed!

Instead, I exported it as a 'QuickTime / MOV (*.mov)' file from VirtualDub2 using the 'FFMPEG / Apple ProRes (iCodec Pro)' compression format:

Judging by the resulting file size, this is an uncompressed video format, and works perfectly in DaVinci Resolve.

Thanks! 8-)

No, it's not uncompressed neither lossless, but it's good for your purpose anyway ;)

Try this if you have an Nvidia card:
Code: Select all
ffmpeg -i in.wmv -filter:v format=yuv444p -c:v h264_nvenc -preset lossless out.mp4

Ensure that you have permission in this directory to create files.

I wouldn't bother with lossless. Use ProRes and you'll be fine.
Lossless is huge and the message might come up due to lack of space.
No, an iGPU is not enough, and you can't use HEVC 10 bit 4:2:2 in the free version.

I have some success with vlc to convert but larger files have not worked . vdub2 settings as shown in thread will not import. i can get topaz veai to open the wmv files and can do a deblock denoise with all setting at 0 and it will convert but far from ideal there has to be an easy way to do this. w/o scripting OK so update i got it working with handbrake

Try Shutter Encoder. Pretty much my Swiss Knife for video these days.
