Scale animation with changing clip lengths

PostSat Aug 24, 2019 5:53 am

Hello everyone.
In the release notes of Resolve 16, one of the new features listed for Fusion says "Ability to flexibly scale animation with changing clip lengths". Sounds like you could define an "elastic" portion in your clip that allows you to stretch it, while the starting and ending keyframes stay put. Does anyone know how this works?
Thanks in advance.

I think they are referring to the Keyframe Stretcher node.

Thanks for your reply. I just tested that node, and that's exactly right! using Keyframe Stretcher, you can define an elastic area, so you can stretch your clip in the edit page, and still keep your keyframes untouched.

This feature is awesome, I think it's a game changer for creating title templates and stuff like that. I find it really odd that Blackmagic is not making a big deal of this, and that no one is talking about this feature.

this is great!
now, can we have a keyframe stretcher in the timeline attributes?

dissolves, trimming etc.

A simple way to do it in the timeline is to copy the clip, make your duration change and then paste attributes with the 'stretch to fit' option selected.

Dissolve keyframes already adjust when changing the dissolve duration.

Thanks for the reply. Its sorta a workaround. Still not good enough though. Editing is about timing. Trimming for timing and then having to adjust keyframes each time doesn't play well, Especially with clients in the room.
This is a must for Resolve. Much more important than the "cut page".
Though I do fancy the trim tool in the cut page. I hope that comes to the Edit page.

So ...

Excellent - other people have noticed this problem with keyframes on clips in the edit tab.

Problem Walkthrough / Description:
In the edit page:
- select a clip
- hit ; to go to the beginning of the clip
- set a keyframe (for example zoom)
- hit ' to go to the end of the clip
- set a keyframe (for example zoom)
- - change the length of the clip
PROBLEM
The keyframe points - do not - scale with the beginning and the end of the clip!!!
---
This is a major usability problem.
---
Currently with Resolve this means that it only makes workflow sense to add in keyframed effects after finalizing the lengths of all the clips in the timeline.
This feature omission is a huge make work usability problem.
--
The UI could simply have a checkbox for [ scale keyframes with clip length ] in the edit page clip inspector.
Hardware and Software Configuration:

ram - Corsair RT 3600MT 128GB (4 x 32GB)
sys drive - SK Hynix P41 2TB
cache drive - PNY 3040 2TB

Man. Coming from Avid, this might be one of the biggest reasons not to edit in Resolve. Major editorial timing gotcha.

This is my #1 feature request. (and I have over 100).

Not only is this a workflow blunder, drilling down to multiple keyframes etc it cumbersome and error laden.

it also is too easy to make mistakes if it isn't caught. How many times on a zoom with a dissolve that the zoom stops before the clip dissolves out? Only to/ be seen after posting for VIP review. ( happened to a friend).

As I keep using Resolve more, I find such imperfections in an otherwise promising software.
I am baffled that this has been omitted from the edit page. Just have a slider that protects the keyframe.

As feature-packed as resolve is this still bothers me and I still feel there must be some features that I cant find that does this. Please do let me know.

I'm afraid the only option is to get the timing right, and then do your keyframes.
My Biases:

You NEED training.
You NEED a desktop.
You NEED a calibrated (non-computer) display.

This was actually addressed a couple of years ago with 'Stretch to fit' option when re-timing.
BUT, it can be confusing:
Using the right-click dialogue on a clip and selecting change clip speed - 'Stretch to fit':
Keyframes will... stretch to fit.
This option also then dictates how the Retime Controls work WHEN adjusting the clip speed
(it doesn't offer up a choice)
SO - the default you have selected with the right-click dialogue controls the Retime Controls option.
BUT - setting speed points and dragging them around.... yea - it doesn't work

So - it always works in some scenarios - (even with keyframes in the Color Page for example), and DOESN'T work with speed point dragging - which really is the most valuable tool.

Long story short - having a rework of this 'feature' would be welcomed.
