Just where are those 500 free foley sfx that were promised?

PostWed Sep 18, 2019 2:32 pm

When Resolve 16 first came out, BMD promised a free library of 500 Foley effects. I'm still waiting. I contacted support back in late July via email. Below is the reply I received:

They are delaying it by a month every time someone asks for it.

Well, someone who has Grant Petty's phone number should call and ask him when he's going to follow through with his commitment!

Hello All,

If you read my posts, you’ll see that my issues stem directly from Blackmagic’s lack of communication. With such great software engineers with their constant updates etc, it’s sad to have a communications department that’s virtually asleep!

Speak up Blackmagic. We can handle things not being released when you say they are - but if you don’t say anything it creates a bad taste in people’s mouths.

Besides keeping up the great work you do, wake up and communicate.

Said respectfully.

Thanks for your post John.

While we wait you can download a sound effect library free from Adobe. Just google "adobe audition sound effects." Your download will be zipped files that you can unzip and place in a folder for your sound effect library.

The last comment I read on the matter was that they were still working on the installer for this stuff. Hey, if they just gave us a ZIP file of the audio files I'm sure most of us could work out how to unpack them into a directory/folder.

Perhaps the most important (missing?) element is an easy way to search such a library. Last time I played with that aspect of Resolve it seemed that you pretty much had to know the exact name of a library audio file to use it -- no meta-data search?

If that's the case then perhaps they're also waiting on an update to Fairlight that will allow decent searching of the foley library.

But I could be wrong (my wife often reminds me of this small but important fact).

I installed the Adobe Sound Effects see above post. Here is a video explaining the process.

The only problem I was having is when I search it gives me a very large number of matches. Well I guess more options is better.

Don't think so. IIRC, Blackmagic made an announcement about providing some free sounds during the DR 16 introduction video several months ago.

My guess is that it has got snagged by some kind of legal "usage rights" issue. That would also explain why they don't want to say anything specific about it.

500 sound clips is not much, by the way. Just a "taster." Sony used to give away 1000 for free, and even big libraries are quite cheap (e.g. Sound FX from Magix Producer Planet site.)

YES, in BMD's Resolve 16 announcement on their website, they said they would be providing the 500 Free foley SFX. My point is, 500 sfx, or 50 sfx, if you stay you're going to do something, then do it!

Earlier today I watched the John's Films YouTube video and have since downloaded all 10,000+ sfx from Adobe.

Still want to see BMD follow through on their commitment.

76erfan .... Take a look at the free ADSR Sound Manager. You can add tags to sounds for more "refined" searches. I often use it rather than Fairlight library for that reason. Then you can just drag/drop your sound into the media pool.

The current answer to this from blackmagic is in the forums, you can search "sound library" or "Foley SFX" and easily find their responses. They shouldn't be expected to answer the same questions over and over, most of us wouldn't, pushing down posts from people asking for help.

Basically they had a better idea to implement it and are working on the installer for it so it is coming. Might not be everyone's favorite answer but it's an answer. It's not like we paid for this free Foley and are now being ignored while they're out drinking beer with our free Foley money, they're supposedly making it better.

Thanks, but I wasn't looking for a defensive, smart aleck response. Just expect them to do what they said they would do.

For anybody looking for sources for free sound effects, here's some links:

http://freesound.iua.upf.edu/usersViewS ... hp?id=1112
http://www.partnersinrhyme.com/
http://www.littlemusicclub.com/
http://www.a1freesoundeffects.com/
http://www.pacdv.com/sounds/index.html
http://freesoundfiles.tintagel.net/Audio/

I think a better way to go is to pay for higher-quality sound effects with a greater variety to choose from. Those are available from these sources:

http://www.sound-ideas.com/
https://www.boomlibrary.com/
http://hartfx.net/
http://hissandaroar.com/
http://www.prosoundeffects.com
http://www.sounddogs.com
http://www.soundsnap.com
http://www.surround-library.com/home

SoundDogs and ProSoundEffects and I think one or two of the others will let you audition and purchase one sound effect at a time, if you're not in the market for an entire library.

Thanks for the links Marc.

I had a look at the free sounds from Adobe, but could not find a license to download.
Are they free for commercial work, for global broadcast . . . ?
Are they free only if you hold a license of Audition?

Download any of their sample packs (the smallest sample pack is "weapons.zip") Inside is a copy of the license which includes a link to their more general terms.

You aren't licensed to use them if you don't have an Adobe CC subscription. Premiere or Audition.

Not sure about CS6, as I didn't ask that - only CC and Premiere Pro Si glen App subscription.

If you have more Adobe licences, then you're definitely in breach of the EULA using these.

But yes, it's a nice collection.

Very nice!
Will the sfx library also receive updates?
I'm a little suprised there aren't really any transition sound effects. Still seems like a useful collection though. Thank you BMD!
