Slow UHD Export but plays fine in color page.

PostThu Sep 19, 2019 2:50 pm

Currently exporting a UHD project with mostly footage from FS7 shot in 4K. The clips play down fine in the color page and edit page. A few clips have NR nodes that have been rendered to cache. On the export Resolve 15 Studio is rendering at 4-7 fps. Even color bars at the top of the show was rendering at 4fps.

Don't understand why the render would be so much slower than realtime if the clips play fine.

All media being pulled and written to a QNAP device that get 1000 MBs read and write. Recently did a music video with 6K red files and have faster render time.

Task manager shows CPU is at 17% GPU is 20% QNAP 200 Mbs

What am I not seeing? How can performance improve?

Did you specify on the Deliver page that the export should be using cached clips ("Use render cache images")?

Otherwise, it'll do everything from scratch.

Yes the use cached clips check box was selected. Even if it were not.

Why is export speed on clips that do not need to be rendered to playback at 23.976 fps exporting at 4fps?

Because you're using half size option for edit and color ? Because you've checked optimized media which are no more used at export ?

What doesn't make sense is the low utilization. GPU should be running at or near 100%.

No I am not using half size for edit and color.

Timeline is UHD with Full UHD monitoring for color correction stage. Using UltraStudio 4K Extreme

Did you monitor GPU usage during playback? It could be that the h.264 codec is the trouble, unrelated to the hardware.... Free or Studio?

Using the Studio version. The last build of R15 I don't recall seeing the GPU getting maxed out during grading. Playback was fine with 8 or more nodes.

So rendering to DNxHQX UHD took four hours thirty five min. Rendering the 4K Flat DCP took three hours fifty min.

Where are you monitoring your GPU activity?
