Animating a straight line

PostWed Oct 26, 2016 7:47 am

Can anyone please advise me how to draw a visible straight line and then animate the line's end points?

If it's a 2d line, create a paint node then draw a polyline stroke then go to the properties editor, open stroke control and play with or animate write on sliders

Hi John,

if you want to animate the position of the end points of a Polyline Stroke, you must publish them first.

Right-click on them and navigate until the option Publish Points.

The Shift-P is also a shortcut for this.

Then you have access to the points XY position inside the Modifiers Tab. See the published points at the bottom:

You can now animate or link this points to anything you want.

How about in 3D? I need to make a visible line attached to two 3D objects.

Then you're probably best off by creating a very thin cylinder stretching from point A to point B.

Ribbon3D might be easier to control, as it lets you set coordinates at both ends instead of having to rotate a cylinder to point at the second object. You can do some cleverness with an opacity ramp to make it look like it's growing, as described here:

I always forget about Ribbon 3D. Good point Bryan. Marek, you should listen to Bryan. ;)

Thank you for suggestions! I ended up using ribbon however it's not ideal solution as I could not have rounded ends. Instead it has these pointy edges.

Also without antialiasing enabled I had some nasty aliasing happening, and with antialiasing enabled I had some dark edges appearing on the green line.
