Fusion: Replacing MediaIn in a Graph by a different one

PostFri Oct 23, 2020 10:19 pm

I have a Fusion Graph where a Media1 is connected to many other nodes.

I should have used PipeRouter which I learned from Bryan. So much easier to avoid this problem.

Now I want to replace the actual Media file within Media1.

I tried cutting and pasting the media file reference in that node -- but that does not seem to work, and I am not surprised - as this may require deeper actions than just changing the file name.

I can certainly create a new Media2 node, and redo all the connections which the previous one had.
Pretty Tedious and Unreliable as so much of Fusion Graph is redrawn automatically and differently (for smart reasons but not for the context of what I am trying to do).

Is there a menu-based procedure for replacing media file in the node?

Search in this forum with relevant terms for this question, did not return any results. But searching for the same on Google gave me results that were actually pointing to posts here. Interesting.. Though the answers were off in different ways

I am also thinking if is there a simple way to insert a Pipe Router to any output node, so that it will connect to the output of a node and move all the original outgoing connectors to emanate from its Output?

Like,
Media1 is connected to Node2, Node3, Node4...
I want to get to Media1->PipeRouter1-> connects to Node2, Node3, Node4...

if this is possible, I can add a new MediaNode2, and do
Media2->PipeRouter1-> connects to Node2, Node3, Node4...

just have to disconnect Media1 from Pipe Router and connect Media2 instead.
Preserving the existing connections.

Thanks in advance Sri.

If you alt-click very close to the Output of the node you want to replace, you can insert the Pipe Router between that Output and every Input it's connected to. You should be able to see the pipes light up to indicate which ones the Router will 'grab.' Once that's done, just drag the new media you wish to use into the Flow from the Media Bin and connect it to the Input of the Router.

Or you can use a Loader to get images or footage directly from disk without going through the Media Bin.

I'm not sure if it works for MediaIn nodes, but for Loaders you can drag a new one from the toolbar, and it will replace the existing node. I don't recall if MediaIn is even in the toolbar to begin with, though.

Beautiful. That worked very well. Thanks Bryan. Pipe Routing is not only great for Organizing the Fusion Graph nicely but also can help in these additional functional ways.
