Importing Clips

PostSun Nov 16, 2014 11:56 pm

Hi there,

i am completely new to post production. So please excuse my maybe stupid question as i know,
Fusion is a High-End-Piece of Software.

I tried (think) most of the ways to load a footage into Fusion. From Drag and Drop from Explorer, over
adding a Loader note and then import up to "just clicking" LD.
I dont see my Videofiles at all. I can however select "All Files" in the dialog and my Video are shown and
when i try to import them, i dont get any error. But as soon as i select the Viewer (pressing 1 or 2) to
preview the footage, i get Loader1 failed at time 0 in the console and nothing is displayed.
I tried with .avi, .mov and .mp4 containers, mostly 1920x1080 25/30/50/60 fps.

Importing images like jpg, png etc works. Same for Sequences (imported some blender-renders)

So is it possible to import and work with "low level Video" at all ? If so.. What am i doing wrong ?

Best regards from Germany

Do you have all the codecs installed on your system?

I think so... i can view all the Clips with players like VLC or Mediaplayer.

Do you see a process running (when checking in taskmanager called eyeonQTServer.exe?
Do you see Quicktime Movies listed in the filetypes dropdown menu in the Open File screen?

I experience the same when running both FU 6.4 and FU 7 side by side. Only the first opened application seems to get to start that process, and I think it is essential for opening video files in Fusion. Try closing all other applications and then open FU first.

Good luck!

I noticed the same thing on my end when I tried to open some mov. files. Is Fusion supposed to be able to open a H.264 mov file?

Thats a negative Sir.

Marc van Vliet wrote:Do you see Quicktime Movies listed in the filetypes dropdown menu in the Open File screen?

Also a negative. (File -> Open lists only Fusion Composition (*.comp) and All Files...
(File -> Import don't show Quicktime even but i don't want to use Quicktime at all)

...and i think i forgot to say.. I am using Fusion 7.5 build 1477

Ok, so the process is not running, therefore video files do not show up. Maybe do a reinstall of Fusion and Quicktime..? Even if you are not using quicktime movies, you need the process I think.

When I talked about File Open screen, I meant the loader node File Open screen. All footage enters fusion through a Loader node. There, you should see a filetype Quicktime Movies.

Ok, i've just installed Quicktime (7.7.6) and now i can see Quicktime in the List of filetypes.
Anyway, no chance of previewing my .mp4 or avi files.
Just to test, i just recorded a little clip with my Canon EOS600D in RAW (.mov) but i can't
preview that too.
Normally, i film with a Sony HDR CX320e (Handycam) in 1920x1080/50p. That's AVCHD .MTS Files.
I can't import them too :(

Any further tips or something ?

Could you put a sample of the video files online somewhere? I could check and see if it works over here..

I've just uploaded 3 Files :

http://uwetetzlaff.de/sample.mts .mts recorded with the Sony Cam.
http://uwetetzlaff.de/sample.mp4 .mp4 recorded with Open Broadcaster
http://uwetetzlaff.de/sample.avi .avi rendered with Blender

Hope that helps to figure things out

Ok, I think it is codec related. Try to install x264VfW - H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec 40.2491. I have a fresh system here so I also needed to get it, but now the AVI works fine. The other two are still not working though. =\

I have no problem opening MP4 files that I have come across so far. Except for the footage that is coming from my Contour2+ cameras =\

First, let me thank you verry much... we're getting closer :)))
I bet you are right with that codec thing.
I googled and found that codec, installed it and was able to open some files.
So i did some more searches and stumbled into K-Lite Codec pack and some
other codecs that i tried/installed.
I was able to open my .mts files... Just.. they are flipped upside down.
The only type i still can't import yet are my Screencapture-Files.
(sample.mp4) Maybe because i did not used the x264 but NVidia NVENC to compress.

Thanks to a good Backup/Restore System i am able to "clean up" these codec tests and
start testing from 0 :)

Hmm.. I must miss something... Whatever kind of codec or codec-pack i try, same results...
I can import .mts flipped upside down and .mp4 no way.
The current "workflow" is open the Video in Blender, convert it to an image-sequence and
import this in Fusion. So the "rendertime" is around doubled.

Is there anything else i can try ?

Converting is usually faster/better in the end. Personally I prefer image sequences.

For quick and easy conversion try AnotherGui. You need to get the latest build of ffmpeg for it to work.

Still, the issue is codecs. I think your way of trying out codecs and restoring to before installation is a good idea to get to the root of this problem.

Iam having an issue importing DLSR footage from a Canon camera to Fusion 7. How can I do that ? Do I have to convert the H264 into something else ?

Return to Fusion
