Best Fusion / Primatte -> Resolve codec / settings?

PostSun Jan 10, 2016 4:20 pm

Hey, guys.

I'm trying to get my workflow set up for green screen. I'm shooting to a HyperDeck using the Avid DNxHD codec, then bringing it into Fusion to key with Primatte. I'm attempting to render it back out using DNxHD as well but regardless of the settings, Resolve does not recognize the alpha channel - the background is always black.

(For the record, I did STFF and found only one thread regarding DNxHD alpha, which was back in March of 2015. No one ever replied to him.)

With that info in mind, I have a couple of questions.

1) Does Fusion DNxHD rendering not support an alpha channel (or perhaps Resolve doesn't read it)?

2) More importantly, when you guys are keying in Fusion and then bringing your work into Resolve for editing, what codec are you using for the Fusion render?

Would appreciate any insights you might have on the best workflow for this.

Thanks!

I would do the whole compositing in fusion and bring back the final image into resolve.
Much better and more options to adjust the key and merge with the background

Thanks, I've pretty much come to the same conclusion.

Watched some Resolve videos where they were keying and compositing there so I thought I'd try bringing in keyed footage (I much prefer Primatte) and seeing what compositing was like in that app, but I think it's best left for editing and color. Altogether an outstanding combination between the two BMD apps, though.
