Domemaster Fusion Macros has Evolved into KartaVR

PostWed Apr 26, 2017 1:53 am

The Domemaster Fusion Macros plug-in has evolved into KartaVR 3 for Fusion.

KartaVR is on display at the Blackmagic Design booth during NAB 2017 where Rony Soussan, the lead Fusion Product Specialist, will be presenting the KartaVR toolset to attendees.

"Karta" is the Swedish word for map. With KartaVR you can easily stitch, composite, retouch, and remap any kind of panoramic video: From any projection to any projection. The KartaVR plug-in works inside of Blackmagic Design's powerful node based Fusion Studio compositing software. It provides the essential tools for VR, panoramic 360° video stitching, and image editing workflows.

Check out the KartaVR product page.

Exciting New Features in KartaVR 3

Stitch 360° Video in Fusion with a PTGui Project File
You can stitch 360° panoramic video directly in Fusion based upon a PTGui project file. This makes the process of building a 360° VR composite easy and fast. Stitching video in Fusion allows you to add visual effects, titles, logos, color correction, and paint out tripods directly in the Fusion compositing environment.

Oculus Rift Support in Fusion
There are now Oculus Rift DK1 and DK2 renderer3D nodes that allow you interact with the Fusion 3D workspace, and display stereo VR images directly on an HMD in Fusion. This feature works on Windows, Linux, and macOS systems that support HDMI video output. The Oculus Rift head tracking module is not supported, but manual navigation controls in Fusion can be used to interactively adjust the camera's point of view.

VR Title Graphics
Adding title graphics and logos to VR content is now simpler than ever. You can place logos anywhere in the 360° view and easily animate their size and position.

Upgrade Pricing
All Domemaster Fusion Macros v1 and v2 customers are eligible for upgrade pricing on KartaVR 3 for Fusion.

It would be great if BM were to integrate this into the next release of Studio (hint, hint BM!) :D

Kel, by that measure you would be saying the same thing about Syntheyes. Lol.

This is not going to happen. Besides, the "Send Media to" pipeline integration scripts in the KartaVR plugin are one of its best selling points for improving the usability of Fusion as part of a larger post workflow would be removed. IMHO there is no way that BMD would place tools in Fusion Studio that link to Adobe's or other directly competing firms design tools.

I don't think Russ will ever give up his autonomy re: Syntheyes.

Volumetric Fog in KartaVR

PostSun May 14, 2017 10:01 am

This blog post shows the results from a VR workflow R&D experiment where CG rendered volumetric fog was added to a live action stereoscopic 360° panoramic forest scene with the help of my KartaVR for Fusion plug-in.

Disparity mapping was used to generate depthmap data that allows the real world filmed trees to intermix with the computer rendered fog layer so the correct density is used as the fog stretches out into the distance in the scene.

This video is a sneak peek look at a new KartaVR feature called "Send Media to Photoscan". This script is planned for release with the next KartaVR update in August.

The new "Send Media to Photoscan" script streamlines an artist's workflow by making it a single click task to send footage from your Fusion/Fusion Studio based compositing session to the AGI Photoscan photogrammetry tool. By adding Fusion to your existing photogrammetry workflow you can get cleaner output from AGI Photoscan and reduce the time spent manually editing point clouds and polygon meshes to remove artifacts.

This workflow improvement is done by leveraging features like Fusion's node based Primatte greenscreen keyer, and Fusion's keyframe animatable rotoscoping tools to mask your footage in advance. The Fusion based imagery (and the included alpha channel masking data) can then be pushed instantly by the “Send Media to Photoscan” script to a new Photoscan .psx project file.

With this KartaVR node based approach you will have ready to use meshes prepared in mere minutes vs the traditional approach of spending hours on tedious mesh post-processing and cleanup in your 3D package.

KartaVR v4 Freeware Edition

As a small Christmas/New Years timed gift to the Fusion community, a new "KartaVR v4" release has been prepared as a free WSL Reactor Package Manager based install. :)

KartaVR v4 is freeware distributed exclusively through the Steak Underwater user community platform. KartaVR v4 can be used on personal and commercial projects at no cost. KartaVR can legally be installed, for free, on an unlimited number of computers and render nodes via the Reactor Package Manager.

You will see these new additions in the Reactor "Bin" and "KartaVR" categories. You should read the KartaVR for Reactor online documentation to get an idea on how the KartaVR toolset differs from the VR tools bundled with Fu 9.

You can download all 16GB of the KartaVR example 360VR video stitching media projects too.

Reactor Based Install Process

Resync Reactor Tip:
You may need to use the advice from this Reactor tech support WSL post to re-sync your local system with the Reactor GitLab repo. This resync option is potentially required due to the large number of new files that were added to Reactor this month.

Reactor Callback Error:
Also, if you install more then 800 files (from atom packages) in a single Reactor Package Manager GUI session you may see a "callback" error message written into the Fusion Console view. Simply closing/re-opening the Reactor Package Manager window will solve this callback issue and let you continue using Reactor to install more content.

Until the Reactor core callback fix is implemented, I'd suggest doing the KartaVR install process 1 atom package at a time and avoid the "com.AndrewHazelden.KartaVR", "com.AndrewHazelden.KartaVR.3rdParty", and "com.AndrewHazelden.KartaVR.Docs" atoms.

To avoid the callback issue during the KartaVR install, close the Reactor Package Manager window once after doing all the "Bin" installs, then close and re-open the window again after installing all of the KartaVR "Tools" atoms. And then finally install all the KartaVR "Scripts" atoms.

Thanks Andrew,

This just adds to the huge amount of work you have already done for the Fusion community. I will be sure to download it as soon as I can be bothered to get back to work!
