Help with creating CGI alpha.

PostThu Sep 14, 2017 5:35 pm

Hi Guys.

Having a complete block and hoping someone can point me in the right direction, this is pretty new to me. I am wanting to integrate a render element into my tracked plate in Fusion.

1. Is a my plate from Syntheyes and imported into Modo.

2. In modo I modelled a simple box. The TOP edge of this box sits on the top of my desk, and in modo it does.

3. Is the alpha.

4. Is the box merged over the plate in Fusion. All is well…sort of.

5 The effect I am looking for from an alpha instead of using a mask in Fusion

6 Mask made invisible

What I can’t get my head around is how to render an alpha in Modo to only show the inside of the box from the entrance at the top, as I can achieve in image 5 and 6 with the use of a mask. But obviously an alpha would be the way to go.

What you asking is kinda Modo question not Fusion
You might want to ask how can Modo render you the mask you need?
I would create a plane inside Modo with hole in the middle and render a black/white texture
the plane would be black, the inside(or face that you want to be visible) to white

render it to use as a mask inside fusion.

Your quite right of course about asking in a Modo forum. I just got a reply, exactly as yours. Thanks, Tanawat.

Not sure if this helps but in 3ds Max I would've created a matte object for the desktop with a hole cut in it the same size as the container, I would've also let the matte object 'receive' shadows so you could pick up the subtle edge shadows from the container onto the desktop. That way I would not need an additonal alpha mask and could just comp the object straight into the shot.

You may also be able to create the desktop with a hole in Fusions 3D using planes and then use the syntheyes camera to animate this to create your alpha (and also maybe get some edge shadows).

In Fusion you can place a plane simulating the border of the table that touches the hole.

In the properties of this plane set Controls > Matte > Is Matte and it will become a kind of "3D" mask that will follow your camera movement.

The plane will "cut" your tunnel like this:

Hi Adelson

I'll definitely give that a go tomorrow as well.
