Best EXR Compression

PostThu Apr 05, 2018 6:47 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm curious as to which EXR compression method is ideal for Fusion . I've heard ZIPs is best for NUKE.

I'm still pretty new to node compositing, managing loaders and trying to develop better and faster Fusion compositing practices.

Thanks,

Jeff

On some recent projects I found it piz wavelet is the best for getting the file size down...

Might not be the most efficient but definitely creates the smallest file sizes...

It depends on your needs; that's why there are several options. If one were "best" then the others wouldn't be offered.

The OpenEXR wikipedia entry contains a decent summary of the different compression methods. It leaves out that DWAA only uses its lossy method for RGBA channels. Auxiliary channels like Z, Normals and World Position are stored with (I think) Zip compression.

Zips is optimized for software that uses scanline rendering, such as Nuke. It will usually be larger than normal Zip because it can't compress vertically. Fusion renders the entire image at once, so it receives no benefit from the scanline compression method.

Not quite, from what I remember, Fusion only loads required scanlines when in proxy mode. In that case ZIPs would certainly speed up image reading.

Thank you guys for your insight, I greatly appreciated it!

I find that Loading 45MB EXR's (ZIPS) is very sluggish - even when pre-caching. It's almost two seconds a frame at QHD. Granted I'm caching from a 7200rpm HDD - but even experimenting with a Raid 0 doesn't speed it up all that much.

What kind of Loader speed can I expect if I plunk down $$$ for an M.2?

Also, is it common practice in Fusion to cache and lock each loader to speed up processing footage instead of fetching every frame?

Thanks again!
