Can't render DNxHR 444 12bit

PostMon Jul 09, 2018 5:08 pm

Hello people!

I'm getting an issue with this specific codec, just the 444, either with MOV or MXF formats.
It gets rendered all black, corrupted somehow. All other DNxHD and DNxHR encoding work, just the 444 not.

I also asked my coworker to try by himself and he got the exact same issue. Since this is the free Fusion version, support didn't care much, therefore here I am :)

Does anybody else have the same problem?

Fusion 9.0.2 build 15 on Windows 10

Thanks!

Hey Ricardo,

I ran a quick test and had the same issue but only when playing back in Premiere and MPC-HC (Media player). It does however playback fine in Fusion and Resolve though. Sounds like a codec compatibility issue.

Thanks for that, Kel!

Do you have Studio version? If yes, do you mind reporting that to BlackMagic?
Since I'm not paying for Studio, they won't accept a bug report from me, even if it's something that could be on the paid version of the software.

Hey Ricardo,

Given Fusion and Resolve can both read the file I would think that this may be a problem with the other software rather than Fusion. I know Premiere is iffy with these types of files and media players in general can be a bit dodgy with DNxH codecs. I suspect its 12 bit that is causing the problem as this is not available in Premiere (10 bit does work) so it may just be outside of Avid, Fusion, Resolve this will cause issues.

Avid can't read it either. Something's not right.

(note that if I exclude the alpha channel from the DNxHR 444 12-bit then Avid can read the file successfully (QuickTime) - it's the presence of the alpha channel that is causing issues)

For MXF it would seem that Avid cannot read a DNxHR 444 12-bit even without alpha...

Yeah, I can't read it anywhere either... I really think that it's something wrong on the DNxHR writing from Fusion.

But it would be nice to have some more people trying that and see if it confirms as a bug.

Were you able to read it into Resolve?

Oh, yeah...let me correct myself: I can't read it anywhere but on BMD software. It works on both Fusion and Resolve.

I've tested, without success:
VLC, MPC-BE, After Effects, Premiere, Seer (preview plugin for Windows)
