Converting an .IFF format to open in Fusion 9?

PostTue Oct 16, 2018 1:55 pm

I'm a beginner with Fusion and I've found some excellent basic tutorials which use an older version of Fusion. Pretty much everything is the same at this basic level, but some of the images they use for the projects are in .IFF format, which Fusion 9 won't open. The images are mostly matte and occlusion passes. Is there another format I can convert the Iff files to which will work in the same way? I've tried tiff, png, jpeg none of which work. I know pretty much nothing about 3D file formats.

Can you share a sample iff file, please? It's a very old, outdated format, but Fusion should still be able to open it.

Also, please unzip and attempt to open the file attached to this message. Let us know if it works.

Yes, the file you attached does open, it's a white circle on a black background. Here is one the images that won't open.

In Fusion, the file name appears in the Loader but nothing appears in the viewer.
I wonder if the problem is that the IFF file type is associated with Photoshop as its default app. The image will open OK in Photoshop. I can't change the file association as in Windows Settings the only options that appear are Photoshop or Choose an App from the Store. In the 'Choose default application by file type' in Windows Settings, the .iff file appears as 'Adobe Photoshop IFFFileType.19'. When I open the properties of the image and click 'change', Fusion appears in the options but the file association resolutely stays with Photoshop! Where it says 'this file came from another computer and may be blocked' I clicked 'Unblock' but still couldn't change it. I don't know what else to try.

Looks like it's damaged or somehow malformed. I can open it with XnView, but trying to resave it from there as another iff doesn't work. Looking at the headers with XnView's Hex mode, there's some unrecognizable data, but I don't know what its significance might be.

I can see a reference to ZBUF, but I can't actually get any information about it or view the channel.

It won't open in IrfanView, which is a pretty good indicator that the file might be damaged.

Thanks very much anyway, for taking so much trouble trying. I wonder what would be a modern equivalent of the IFF file format?

OpenEXR. It carries an arbitrary number of channels, is compressible, open source, and all modern renderers and compositors can both read and write it.
