Neon Paint Style?

PostWed Feb 20, 2019 12:59 am

Hey guys,

I was wondering if there was a way to change a paint node and only the node so after I draw my animation on my clip to change it to a bright neon color? Basically the look of a light saber XD

Do I use the glow effects?

And how would I go about it? (Screen shot of node routing appreciated.)

You can try a Soft Glow after the Paint node.

So I tried doing this and for some reason the paint and glow nodes don’t show up in my viewer two like yours. Also, it’s not as light sabery as I thought it would be. Check out blotter media on Instagram to know exactly what I’m trying to achieve.

Hi Jamie,
I'm not sure if you're allowed to post links and images yet, but coming here to help people takes up quite a lot of time as is, I'm definitely not going to go to instagram and find users to figure out what your question actually is. Everyone here is definitely willing to help you - myself included - but it has to be reasonable.

If you want to see stuff in your viewer, drag the node you want to see to your viewer or press 1 or 2 with the node selected to make the image appear on the left or the right viewer.

Lots of roto and the some nice glows, not so difficult.
You only need to find a good setting for the glow.
Try the expoglow from reactor or the multistep blur (also in reactor)

And glow will always look nicer on a dark background

Awesome that for your looking (person who posted above me.) . I didn’t think there was any roto just painting in after effects. I see that the main drawing lines are almost pure white and the glow is a color (sometimes)

And as far as not seeing certain nodes in windows is there an order of operations for seeing nodes? Does that make sense? I feel sometimes I drag nodes in and they don’t show up automatically and other times they do. The nodes just don’t flow naturally with my brain or something lol

You can also select a node, then hit either the 1 or 2 key to have it show up in the 1st or 2nd viewer. On the bottom left of the node their is also an indicator of what viewer that node is displayed on, there are 2 dots that turn white when the node is displayed on a certain viewer. You can also click on those to choose which viewer to use for that node.

You can also paint a shape then animate it's center if the overall shape doesn't change much, or you can rotoscope.

Is it possible to change the core line to white and have the glow be a specific color?

Yes. You can have the core line be whatever color you want. You can then add other Paint nodes and different types of glow Nodes or other Nodes like Blur to attain a variety of effects. Play around with it and see what you can do.
