Planar tracker - track sliding issue.

PostTue Aug 20, 2019 7:56 pm

So I'm comping on a 1920x1080 plate, but I'm using planar tracking and I like to attach an image that is 2000x2000 resolution. I'm using the "Create Planar Transform" to matchmove my image. However, I'm getting sliding if I don't use the same resolution as my plate.

I can shrink my image down to fit inside a BG node that is 1920x1080, but my track will zoom in and I need the higher resolution of the image. If I overlay the 2000x2000 image over a BG node with 1920x1080, my image gets clipped. Is there anything I can do about this? Thx.

Welcome to the wonderful world of relative coordinates. Because movements in Fusion are relative (effectively percentage based) a move from left to right on the screen will always result in the same movement (optically) whether you use a 16 x9 image or a 1920x1080 - the move will look and feel the same way. The downside to this behaviour, you've just discovered.

The cool thing is that if you set it up correctly Fusion will not actually cut off your image if you merge it on top of a 1920x1080 BG node. The image will continu to 'exist' beyond the border of the BG.

If you merge your 2Kx2K image over the BG and then use the planar transform tool, you can then merge the result on your original image and Fusion will use the full resolution.

Thanks, I got it working. It was just not visually intuitive :)

You're right. It's not. But it makes up for that in usefulness.

I think it would just be visually helpful if they just showed the ghosted image outside the main HD box. That would help indicate the information is still there instead of being cropped off.

The strange thing is that - depending on which tool you select - this does happen. At least in Fusion standalone. Ghosted images will appear outside of the actual image to show you what else is there.
