Ultrastudio 4K mini, mic XLR problem

PostSun Apr 04, 2021 3:45 pm

Hello to all.

I bought two 4k mini ultrastudio for outdoor work.

I tried to record audio from xlr mic but it doesn't work if there is no SDI video signal.

i searched the forum and found other users with this problem but no solution.

it's a joke?

$ 900 card and can't record audio without a video signal?

it's not possible, I'm sure.

how can i record audio from xlr microphone without video signal?

Thanks to the blackmagic technicians who will answer.

Same problem: I'd like to use the XLR input on my UltraStudio 4K Mini as a system audio-only input but this appears to be unsupported.

Unfortunately, it has been this way for years and years.

If all you want to do is record audio, a 200 Tascam 6d would be a much cheaper option.

3 years later, problem is still there. Ultrastudio 4K mini has an XLR conector just to decorate the front panel.

I just discovered that if you connect the XLR input on the front panel to the MONITOR OUT output on a sound mixer, the sound signal works like a charm. So you cannot connect a mic directly to the BM but you can feed the audio from an external source.

It’s a video device, audio is getting embedded in the video signal, that’s why you need a video input. But why do you want to record audio only in a video device? Therefore you need other (and cheaper) equipment.

It's possible and it certainly works on the almost identical DNxID unit, within Avid; somehow they got it to work. It worked too on almost every other I/O device from Aja and Matrox. Trouble is BMD never have understood the need for slash guide comm, that your producer might need to record during the edit; that is used in most all Television.

You can't normally record audio without a video signal present; it won't clock. The workaround, in Avid at least, with the US 4K Mini, is to loop SDI into to out, but it doesn't work in DR. Fortunately there you can use another device for pure audio.
