Audio monitoring 5.1 out of Resolve

PostThu Jun 21, 2018 10:58 am

Hello,
I'm really not into sound mixing but I would love to upgrade my grading room with a 5.1 setup.
What piece of hardware do I need to be able to listen to 6 audio tracks? I understand that multiple audio channels are embedded in SDI but the Decklink Video Desktop is limited to 2 output channels, right?
Is there a box that would take SDI input and output 6 audio channels that I would then dispatch on 6 speakers?
Reagards.

Yes. There are a couple of routes you can take. Look for a converter that supports "dis-embedding" the audio content. HD-Link is in that category, some HDMI disembedders can be utilized. It depends on your budget, deployment, how critical your environment is, whether you want discrete analog paths or a conversion to a TOS-Link interface... and so on.

Thank you JP! I had totally forgotten my old hdlink. It looks like it is going to have a second life. What would you plug between the hdlink and the speakers?

Any 5.1 receiver or amplifier with discrete 5+1-channel inputs and speaker/sub-driving outputs. For years, I used a Denon AVR-1906. I see a lot of on-line critics writing that most Denon AV receivers are far better adapted for "Movie" reproduction than for audiophilic "Music" -- but still pretty good, even for the FLAC folks.

Speaker selection and listening environment are a different discussion, because then we are getting into a "how do I design a mixing theatre?" argument.
