Photo Editing with GPU Plus with MacBook Pro 13" 2016

PostTue Jun 25, 2019 12:34 pm

Clueless newbie here...

I just set up my new Blackmagic GPU Plus with my MacBook Pro 13" 2016. Looks nice on my desk!

I got it for photo editing. I currently mainly use Apple's Photos for macOS with stand-alone apps such as Photolemur and the AI Bundle by Topaz Labs.

I just tried out all of the above and I can't seem to notice any difference in performance, so thought to ask:
1. Is there some setting I need to turn on before my Mac will know to use the GPU Plus?
2. Or, is it that the software I'm using doesn't recognize/support the GPU Plus?

If you have a thunderbolt 3 Mac, it should see it and it should show an icon in the top bar near the date and other icons that looks like a computer chip and says "Disconnect ...." if you click on it. Alternatively, click on the apple in the top-left corner, select "About this Mac" then "System Report" and look under "Graphics/Displays". You should see all your video cards listed there.

I believe that On One Raw uses the GPU but I don't think photo editing will use enough to make a noticeable difference unless you are doing noise reduction. In that case, I believe Neat Image (like Neat Video) uses the GPU. There is a configuration tool for Neat Video that you can download and use without owning the software and it will tell you what it thinks is the best combination of CPU and GPU cores for your system. Here is the Neat Image compatibility page: https://ni.neatvideo.com/features/compatibility. Here is the Neat Video configuration tool: Neat Bench: https://www.neatvideo.com/download/neatbench

Thank you, I'm good now!

I also found this online, which I'll leave here in case someone else has the same question:
