File system permissions

PostWed Sep 19, 2012 3:52 pm

When I grab a still, I get a warning that says

Failed to create directory '/.gallery/d2/3b'. Please check the file system permissions.

Of course, the file path after "gallery" varies.

I'm not sure what to do about this.

Without knowing what version of Resolve you have, I can't get specific. But basically, the first path you have selected in the Resolve Preferencs for Media, is the DEFAULT path used to store stills and cache files.

In any given project, you can see what that path is by looking at Resolve Working Folders area. If the default path is not what you want it to be, you can always manually change it to another path in the Working Folders area.

Whatever path you currently have selected for Stills, is currently pointing to a location that Resolve does not have permission to write to, and that generates the error message when it tries to save a Still.

The most common reason for this, is that in Resolve Preferences, people will point the first media path to the top level of their system hard drive. Resolve does not have permission to write to that area. So you need to pick a folder lower in the directory structure of the system hard drive that Resolve CAN write to, or pick a path to a different drive that Resolve can write to.

This did not "resolve" my issue. No pun intended but I still have the errors. Davinci Resolve 9 Lite/Mac OS X.8.2

Can you provide a screen shot of your Project Settings / General Options / Working Folders area?

Or if not, what is the current path shown in that area for the "Gallery stills stored at:"?

Be sure that in Preferences>Media Storage, you specify a non-top-level directory and that it is first in the list.

Have you re-saved the still since correcting the Stills path issue?

If you grab a new still now, and you don't get an error, does that still show up as black when you play it?

Error pop is back. I guess it is not fixed. My Scratch Disk is pointing to another drive and a separate folder

Stills path is in another directory and it's still coming up with a pop up error. Still shows as black. I changed the directory multiple times and restarted the computer.

That means that Resolve does not have write permission to the new folder as well. You need to pick a folder that the Resolve app can write to.

How can I find out what folder Resolve has permission to write to or not?

Ok. Got that fixed. Phewww!! Now I want to change the batch edit. I've seen it before on the beta versions but I do not see where you can ungang batch edits .... where I make an edit on a clip and it effects similar clips.

The batch functions have been renamed. Hopefully this helps:

Here are the new labels (available on all non Master session timelines):
Batch Copy = Copy Remote Grades to Local
Batch Unlink = Use Local Grades
Batch Link = Use Remote Grades

Thank you so much. Was looking for it. Is this updated in the manual? I should RTFM, then if so!! Thanks again Dwaine

Hi Dwayne,

I'm jumping into this thread because I have a similar problem with Resolve.
I'm currently on v9.0.3 Mac.

The permissions are set correctly: the top volume in the hierarchy is where my stills should be stored, in this case: /Volumes/Media.
However, when I go to create a still I get this message:
"Failed to create directory 'Volume/Volume_1/.gallery/fb77. Please check the file system permissions."

Here's the thing, Volume_1 did once exist on our network, but was renamed last year during Resolve v8. Resolve v8 recognized the change and worked flawlessly.

Now this.
On the one hand it's as if v9 sees the correct names of the drives, but on the other hand it seems to be reaching back in time to a volume that no longer exists.

Can you offer a solution or fix to this issue?

Thanks,

Hi James,

Please go into Resolve preferences, and Save the prefs and restart. I assume you already did this when you originally changed the Media settings, but lets try again to be sure.

Also, you can save custom path settings for the Stills, Cache and Proxy files in user Presets and in Projects. So check in Project Settings / General Options / Working folders and see if the old path might be coming from a Preset or a Project you are loading.
