Audio metadata

Audio metadata

I am doing a dailies project where I am syncing Alexa ProRes to audio from a Zaxcom Diva.

Resolve 9 is doing a good job of assigning the correct scene and take metadata to my clips from the sync'ed Diva's metadata (except for the earlier bug I reported where you have to re-enter the data in order to be included in the burn-in). What it is not doing is automatically assigning the Sound Roll # or the Audio Start T/C.

It is a pain to have to hand enter this information, especially the timecode. This should be an automatic process when syncing.

So almost as an experiment, I copied the starting sound TC from the Conform page Edit Audio Timecode dialog to the Audio Start TC metadata field for each master clip.

My delivery requirements asks for the Sound Reel and TC to be a flash burn on my editorial files.

When I turned on the Audio Timecode burn in, I get a TC display that starts from 00:00:00:00.

It seems like there is a lot of work to do in this area. I will report what I find.

When I synced my ALE the Sound Roll # and Audio Start T/C came across as custom metadata columns. Not bad.

When possible, it would be better to populate the standard Avid metadata columns for Sound Roll and Sound TC. This would allow for better audio conform workflows and you would be able to view the Audio TC numbers in the Viewer window displays.

While there is still room for improvement in this area, you should be very careful in putting audio timecode in the SoundTC column in an HD project as it is hard coded to count at 30fps regardless of project frame rate. While it has long been the appropriate place when working in the SD world (NTSC), that column never got properly updated to be at the same rate as the project rate. Only the AuxTC 1-5 columns count at the rate of the project type. So Avid needs to do some work here as well to make it easier, but be aware of this when making dailies.

Being able to log the timecode of synced audio files would be a great feature. That, plus a corresponding audio tc window would make digital dailies possible.

I did some testing with Resolve 9.0.3.

The problem I had with having to retype the Scene and Take metadata seems to be working great now.

Resolve automatically populated the Sound Roll# field based on synced audio, but did not populate the audio TC fields.

This would be next on my list of most important metadata for dailies.
