viewing prores files on windows

PostMon Mar 29, 2021 3:56 pm

After searching google and reading many articles, I still am not sure how I can view the prores files from my BMPCC 4k in Windows. Different articles state the newest versions of VLC and Windows Media should work. However, I only get audio and a blank video screen. I am running the latest version of Windows 10.

Anyone have a solution?

Get the free version of Resolve and you can’t only view it, but edit and grade to your heart’s delight.
It’s export that’s not available.
Now that the cat #19 is out of the bag, test it as much as you can and use the subforum.

Thanks Richard and Uli. I have DaVinci Resolve but I don't want to mess with that while filming. I would love to be able to plug in the hard drive to my laptop and view the footage I just shot. I can do it with a Mac but can't find a way with a PC.

if this can't be done, I guess I'll have to switch to BRAW and use the new Windows viewer?

What ?
You can't play ProRes in 2021 on PC? You must be relaying on Widnows media player which can play only few formats reliably.

VLC, MPC-HC, Telestream Switch (15$, but with some useful bits for this price), MPV, PotPlayer, CinegyPlayer etc etc. ProRes been playable on Windows for years (or from day one with QT 7, which is still useful to have).
Tons of options, most are free.

I believe you need to install a Prores codec on Windows then VLC will playback Prores. I also read somewhere that changing the settings to OpenGL in VLC´s settings will fix the issue. You can try this on VLC 3.0.6 or greater.

All these players rely on internal capabilities.
Old need of installing a codec is about gone. Applies only to some specific cases and if you want to use WMP.

You can download MPV for viewing and Icaros for thumbnail. Like in this video.

Also probably need this:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/106401

If you want to use VLC. You can set video output in vlc settings to openGl for windows

But don't use the QuickTime Player. It's outdated and a security risk.
QuickTime videos are no problem at all.
