GUI resolution and grading monitor via Thunderbolt

PostMon Oct 21, 2013 1:14 am

Question - Davinci is optimized for 2560 x 1440, I'm assuming 2560 x 1600 is peachy?

Question - looking down the road to the new MacPros and leveraging the Thunderbolt ports, I'm assuming we can hang a grading monitor off an UltraStudio Mini Monitor to see the graded video?

And the grading monitor, can it just be an older NEC MultiSync with DVI ports with an HDMI to DVI converter before the monitor, but after the UltraStudio Mini Monitor?

That should work tho it'll not longer be 10bit as DVI is 8bit.

Or can you by-pass the UltraStudio Mini Monitor altogether and use the Mac Pros built-in HDMI port for the grading monitor?

And if the monitor is 1920 x 1200 - instead of 1080 - still no problem?

I think we're moving too fast for you - not the GUI, the grading monitor! :)

I re-read the answer and yes it make no sense whatsoever. (I swear it was clear in my mind...)

For the GUI that resolution should not have issues, for the main output I will stay at 1920x1080 standard HD

One note when trying to feed a desktop monitor from something like an UltraStudio's HDMI port is that not all desktop monitors will support things like interlaced or 24 Hz video signals — in the world of flat screen computer monitors everything is pretty much driven from a progressive 60 Hz signal, and while some hardware can deal with other things, this is not by any means universal.

If you're looking for a cheap display that doesn't have these issues, there are 22-23" 1080p televisions available at around $200 now. Color accuracy is, of course, going to be rather questionable, but no more so than with standard computer displays. (Pricey EIZO, etc. monitors with built-in color management are a different story.)

Good to know.

Just talked to NEC - none of their monitors accept 24 Hz video signals. I was looking to move a MultiSync unit to grading duty via the Mini Monitor, but apparently that won't work! Thanks gang.

What if you force the card to output in 1080p 60i? Would that work with a regular monitor?

It's not really the card, I don't believe - you rely on the Thunderbolt out connection through an UltraStudio unit, so unclear how you'd force that?
