Unsharp masking threshold equivalent

Finding the sharpening window not very intuitive if you're only familiar with using USM in Photoshop or After Effects.

For instance, setting the threshold value is very useful in CU shots with faces, when you want to sharpen everything except facial blemishes and wrinkles.

Can any experts provide some tips?
