QT Prores 4444 12bit workflow?

PostSat Oct 06, 2012 2:12 pm

I am currently looking for a viable solution going from RAW DNGs to a smaller size codec without losing the 12bits. Can I transcode the raw files to QT Prores 4444 and still be able to grade with the same flexibility in Resolve? Or Do I need to do a tech light in resolve like placing a LUT on the raw footage and export to QT? And if you guys prefer Cineform studio, I just want to put it out there: Prores is a 4k 12bit codec in 4444. At least that was mentioned in wikipedia.

Yes ProRes 4444 can be 12bits, RGB full scale, and 4k. But its really hard to tell what apps do with it.
I know of no reliable way to tell without difficult testing with gradients. It easy to see the difference between 8 and 10 bits, not so easy between 10 and 12, especially when all you have is a 10bit monitor.

It would be nice if there was a Blackmagic whitepaper that explained how and when ProRes 4444 can be 12bits.

What I am wondering is if we keep the source non debayered or as flexible as in the DNG format. Flexibility in the color temperature (WB) and other things one would expect from a RAW file. Since a DNG is only a container for a 12bit source, I would expect the same flexibility and level of adjustments from a QT 4444 12bit.

ProRes 12bit will contain latitude, but it won't be as flexible because you will have had to lock in things like color temperature, etc.

But this is the same for DPX files or EXRs, or even ACES.
