DaVinci 10 runs very slow :(

PostTue Dec 10, 2013 4:17 pm

I am testing DaVinci 10 Light on my system and bought the recommended GTX 680 4GB to be shure everything works just fine.
But sadly it does not :(

Only with 1080p Prores sources I get proper playback.
A RED 3K timeline is playing back at 11fps and
a Sony RAW 4K timeline at 3fps.
Even without any correction on it...
If I ad nodes it stays the same.

Settings below.
No difference if I run OS or NVIDIA Web Driver for the card.

Any idea what could be wrong?
Could not find out my self.

System:
Mac Pro mid 2010 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
16Gb RAM
MacOs10.8.5
GTX 680 4GB single GPU
two monitors at 1080p
no extra video monitor

Playback settings at 8bit 1080Fsp24

Thanks for any help.

What drives are you using to store your source footage and what drive are you rendering to.

4K is really data intensive. So you need to be running a fast RAID for footage and a separate RAID for rendering to. Your os should also not be running of either of those drives.

Are you connecting both 1080p displays to the GTX680? If so you are I using up GPU resource on your displays. You should have a deprecate card to drive you GUI displays.

Thanks for the advice.

When playing back the drive delivers around 10MB/s.
The drive can do 120MB/s so that seams not to be the problem.

The GTX has not much to do when no nodes are applied and playback and timeline
are set to 720p. Changing the resolution does make no difference at all.

But I noticed that my CPU is running at maximum speed when playing back.
All 8 virtual cores run DPDecoder at around 90%.
Is my CPU the problem? I thought it´s always about GPUs and drives ... ???

RED needs to be decompressed and de-bayered. If I'm not mistaken this is done by the CPU. Same is probably happening for Sony 4K RAW. Even if it's being done in GPU a single GTX680 won't be enough for 4K real time.

Drive speed is still important. Have you run the BM Disk Speed Test?

Apparently that´s a CPU task...
But why can Premiere Pro play the same timline perfectly smooth and Davinci not?

Did you try lowering the debayer resolution? Premiere defaults to using something less than full. That might explain the difference.

Thanks! That was the button. Play Quality on "Quater Res. Good"
No running 24fps including a bunch of nodes on the clips.
You made my day :)

always remember one thing the red footage can play realtime with redrocket cards only..red 4k will play realtime at quarter resolution debayer quality...but the epic 5k footage is very hard to play realtime...we need 2x redrockets, i am using..2x gtx 780ti..lsi logic raid card and my storage speed is also 600mb/sec..but there is no 24 fps playabck..with red 5k. but 4k is playing realtime with quarter debayer quality..u must need a raid storage with minimum 300mb/sec..for good realtime playing ..
