Graphics card recommendation - Mac

PostTue Oct 09, 2012 6:05 pm

I figured this would be an often discussed topic, but I find only one post in the first five or six pages of topics.

Blackmagic recommends the Nvidia CUDA cards, but that covers a lot of ground. Price points range from $200 to $1700 or so, and it's not clear what I really need for Resolve and maybe After Effects. Review pages seem to concentrate on gaming, which is not my bag.

Any recommendations which graphic card to go to for:
Macintosh Pro 8-core tower (2 years old)
Red R3D files (to 5K or better)
Price is a consideration (I'm not making money at this :) )

Thanks for any suggestions,

A GTX570 card would be a good choice.

Its in the PDF manuals as far as recommendations.
One is the Quadro 4000.
Waiting for the Mac K5000 to be approved.

Dwaine - thank you for the recommendation.

Eric - I'm not finding that in the Colorist Reference Manual (looking in the index and searching on the words "graphics" "GPU" and "Quadro". I should have thought to look in the Manual, but was using the Resolve Configuration Guide, since it was just updated, but I missing it in the Manual anyway. Could you give me a page reference?

Regards,
Nelson

I should qualify the GTX570 recommendation with the comment that you need to use Lion 10.7.3 or 10.7.4 with the proper GPU driver from the NVIDIA driver download site, or it works natively with Mountain Lion. It will not work in Snow Leopard.

re Lion/Mtn Lion

arghh! I'm still on Snow Leopard, but may have to make the move. Thanks, though.

The config guide links are now at the top of the post production section.

Thank you for your patient replies. For some reason I did not see the very detailed information about graphics cards and other items in the Configuration Guide. Operator error, I guess, though I thought I'd scrolled through the whole thing.
