New Mac Pro

PostFri Dec 13, 2013 2:13 am

I need a simple computing solution.
Buy the box and have it capable of managing my BM 2.5K.

Will the new Mac Pro have everything we need?

Well the current iMac can deal with BMCC 2.5k RAW so I see no reason why the Mac Pro would not.

You would still need a RAID for your footage and an IO box to connect a calibrated reference monitor.

Adam Roberts, thanks... for the replay.
I have been looking for a clear path to get work done with a new BM 2.5k.
The PC avenue seems murky and expensive... for Resolve 10 requirements.

Looks like the MAC Pro X is my move.
Now in your opinion should I take the Quad or the Six pack in the MAC?

I have never needed to purchase a RAID before... any links to products would be great or perhaps I should visit Apple Store or the BM Configuration pdf again...

The IO box you speak of is it the DeckLink 4 ?
Or
The Ultrastudio 4

Hey Mark

I got tired of waiting for the new Mac Pro and built a Hackintosh (http://www.adamroberts.net/blog/davinci ... sh-part-1/) earlier this year. It worked out cheaper than the top of the line iMac and it more powerful. So a PC to run Resolve should not cost that much.

Resolve need GPU power more than it needs CPU power. So you really want to get the best GPU you can afford. Sadly the new Mac Pro does not come with that many options. However Blackmagic have said that Resolve runs very well on the new Mac Pros. We will have to wait to see the results.

Personally I would get the 6 Core version as it has the better GPU:
"Dual AMD FirePro D500 graphics processors with 3GB of GDDR5 VRAM each"

2GB of GPU VRAM is currently the minimum that BM suggest for Resolve if you are working in HD. More for hight resolutions.

As for RAID. I'd look at a Thunderbolt RAID. I run a Promise Pegasus R6 which is great: http://www.promise.com/storage/raid_ser ... 40&rsn3=47

Promise now offer a Thunderbolt 2 version: http://www.promise.com/promotion_page/p ... al&rsn=100

I think that would be the best option on the new Mac Pro. The Promise is so easy to set-up and manage.

UltraStudio Mini Monitor would be the cheapest and simplest option for connecting a calibrated display.

What is a calibrated reference monitor?

I looked at the BM website and they have that 4k rack thing but the screen looks like its the size of my thumb?

It's a monitor that can display the full range of colour for your intended destination. These are 10bit displays that are calibrated for colour critical work.

There are many option out there. Flanders Scientific being very popular as they off affordable monitors with a great death of features. Sony also make very good reference monitors as do others.

Generally they start our at around $2500 and go up... At the top end they cost more than a house.

That little screen in the 4k rack is not a calibrated reference monitor. It's simple there to check the signal passing through the unit.
