PostWed Oct 10, 2012 7:46 pm

I wonder if anyone has figured out how to store dng to some more storage
friendly format ?

specially mean material you will not use but want to retain.

convert to prores 4444 etc.

any ideas?

Depends on what you mean by more friendly? More storage, long term, cheaper per GB? And are you willing to lose the DNG files for a compress format? Your lowest cost, and longest shelf life is an LTO tape with LTO5 being the current standard. If you are looking to hard drives, know that they will fail at some point in the future - and that is will some TLC of spinning them up, from time to time, etc. So if the goal is to store as much footage on a drive due to costs - then a ProRes proxy of the media as 444 might be the way to go. It will offer ~5x more footage for the same drive size.

I have the full intention of trying the film log in 12-bit ProRes 2K idea when I receive my unit.

Not only do you get the full range of the raw file, it's also 3 times smaller, you get 2K resolution and also are able to cut and grade directly in your NLE (I use FCPX).

If the Log 2K 12-bit 444 out of the raw files through Resolve works out, I'll probably do that and ditch the raw files if it proves to be a decent trade off.

yes that is exactly what i mean. when you finish your project and mostly you have some material that you do not use but still want to retain then prorez may be the way to go.

i work wit tv spots mostly and there you have just some of the material in the end lets say 30 sec.

so these parts would stay in raw but all other stuff would go to prorez maybe.

this is why i ask.

lto seems slow to me at the time. i use hdd with double drives for many years now.
when ever i do archiving then i make 2 versions on separate drives and put them into shelf.
until now works perfectly.
