DaVinci performance with BMCC Raw files on Retina MBP

PostFri Oct 12, 2012 4:42 am

Hey,

I was wondering what kind of performance people are getting with DaVinci Resolve (Lite) 9 and the afterglow footage on the new Retina MacBook Pro. There are not so many reports out there. I am getting 15 fps max on playback. and was wondering if performance could be improved somehow.

Can the Lite version handle the 2,5K files properly? I thought it would only handle HD. might that be the reason? Or is the system just not that strong?

My setup:
Resolve Lite 9.0.1
Mac OS 10.8.2
2,6 GHz i7
16 GB
Cuda 5.0.36
fotage on internal ssd
Working in 1920x1080 scaling mode. Automatic graphics switching is turned off.

Thanks,

Julian L

The Lite version can grade 2K and even 4K but will only output HD. I have also tried r3ds in Lite version.

I haven't tried using a Retina MBP - but on my MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2011, Model 8,2, OS X 10.8, 2.5GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6770M 1024MB, Apple SSD TS256C), I can get about 6-12fps. The NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M in your laptop obviously gets you SLIGHTLY better performance.

for portable computers this all seems really great to me as theyr gpu's are limited.

even on big systems some of the gpus do not have more speed in some cases.

i consider laptop as on set or look creating unit and should be treated as one
as no expandability now to the gpu part.
have not seen any viable tb based extenders also that work miracles on performance.

they will get you buy but with half a smile i'd say.
