Mac Mini for BMPCC Editing?

PostSat Jan 11, 2014 7:58 am

Hello,

I have the chance to buy a Mac Mini from a friend at a very good price. This is the version I could buy:

2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 (Turbo Boost up to 3.3GHz) with 6MB L3 cache
Intel HD Graphics 4000 (512MB)
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 memory
256GB solid-state drive

My editing needs are:

1. strictly ProRes footage
2. all grading done in Film Convert (their site says a minimum of 256 Mb of video RAM is required for HD GPU render)
3. all editing done in FCPX
4. very minimal editing style with few effects

Portability is important. I am essentially planning on using this machine as a laptop replacement when on assignment. All video files would be accessed from an external SSD or USB 3.0 drive.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

The mini would be fine for ProRes editing in FCPX. It'll be a little slow as FCPX uses OpenCL and the GPU to speed up tasks.

It won't run Resolve tho but I'm sure you are aware of that.
