How are you supposed to turn this (super loud) device off? I know some people may be laughing out there... but seriously, you're supposed to just unplug it?

Yep, there's no off switch so you have to unplug it

Get a rack-mount power strip with outlets on the back and a switch on the front (like this). You'll be able to control power for a whole (small) rack worth of gear from one switch. Similar units are available with one switch for each outlet if you need to control power to each device individually.

Re: UltraStudio 4K

Today i unboxed the Ultrastudio 4K and was shocked HOW NOISY this thing is…
The Fan is way louder (or more specific: more disturbing) than my fully blown MacPro AND my HP Workstation together!
No way of using it on my desktop (nor under the desktop, where i planned to place it).

In the BM PrefPane i found a setting "Set cooling fan speed: Low Speed for quiet operation".
But it´s greyed out and i can´t use it. Is there a way to slow down the fan or any other way to make
this "vacuum" a bit less noisy?
I´m willing to take some money in my hands for that ( exchanging the fan for example).
Some thoughts?!

Thanks for the response. I, too, have been wondering about the greyed out options in BMD System Preferences. What's up with that? I would love to turn the (fairly useless in my setup) display off if possible, but it looks like those options are just unavailable. I would love an explanation of that.

I have to say, compared to other broadcast gear, the US4k isn't very loud. try sitting in front of a rack of folsom image pros with failing fans...

Hi folks

JUST WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS FOUND A SOLUTION TO THIS?

Sorry to shout, but I can't hear myself think over all this blooming fan noise.
Has anyone taken an US4k apart? Seems like its the fan at the side causing all the commotion. Its obviously running at high speed and the air coming out is quite warm, so I'm not sure that BMD just used a cheap fan or if this thing just kicks out a ridiculous amount of heat.

I'm wondering if there's enough space for a CPU water cooler?
This one looks hassle free and is only £50:
Code: Select all

Whether it will fit inside is another matter.

A small price to pay to get my hearing back though.

How would you fix it to the internal board? And how would you power the pump and fan?

Fixing it would would depend upon what was inside the unit, I have plenty of external PSUs lying around for power and am more than comfortable with a bit of tinkering and modding ;)

Any idea what's inside?

Nope, wouldn't want to invalidate the 3 year warranty

If one were willing to void the warranty, one could probably open it up and replace the fan with a quiet fan from SilenX or Noctua or the like. I have done this on some devices, like a Cyberpower UPS because I need to use it on set.

I just opened mine up and had a look and listen.

There are two fans.

One is screwed onto the board over top a 'Chip' ... it has a 35mm square mounting hole pattern and no identifiable markings (they may be underneath it, I have not removed it.

The other is held up on two spacers, and sucks air out of the left side of the case looking from the front. It is identified as:

COFAN FB5051L12B (12V 0.08A) it also has the number 4302 on it.
With the lid off I disconnected this fan ... it is the noisy culprit.

I am on a PC at this moment, I took photos on my iPhone when I get back to my Mac, I will upload an image and a video.

Strange that the exhaust is on the side. Rackmount gear almost always vents out the rear. Unfortunately I've never seen any quiet alternatives for a fan of that shape. If you're able to leave an empty rack space above this unit, there might be enough space to install two round fans in the top panel, and cut vents in it. One intake, one exhaust. Then disconnect the noisy one.

i am using the Ultrastudio 4k in a 'normal' video studio. But it's really hard to work with a noisy fan like that... Going crazy with the noise....
No one with a solution? Would be nice to be able to replace the fan with a quieter one...

We have a machine room where all the noisy gear is located. Here's a link to silent rack enclosures.

Looking to upgrade to this unit. However with all the folks talking about the fan noise, not sure I want to do that. Unclear if this can be done as I don't have a unit, wondering if the factory fan could be replaced by 2 fans that spin at lower rpm but together still have the same CFM value?

my US4K is also too noisy to be usable. i had specced racks for the suites, but got AC instead, so for the most part, we actually don't use the 4K at all. :( instead we use the mini monitor, - the downside is that it's only 422.
btw what do people use to monitor P3? the ultrasudios don't exceed REC709 it seems

P3 or Rec.709 makes no difference. Set Resolve to P3 etc, preview as normal, just set your watching device to P3 so it knows incoming signal is P3.

thank you, but this is not self evident to me... could you link to some kind of explanation as to WHY it makes no difference?

Because it's the same 10bit video over SDI/HDMI and gamut doesn't matter (same for Rec.2020). Rest is the setting what you send (Resolve setting)+ correct monitor preset. This is the way how you do it. The only thing is that ideally signal to high-end projector can be 12bit, but not all cards do it.
SDI cards don't have a gamut as such.

Hello!

I have a question about non-specific workflow.
Can i use the Ultrastudio 4K as a standalone (without mac plugged) converter Analog-to-SDI?
Usually, I'm using it for recording\playback as it own for.
And the second question is - remote RS232 port - is there any information about it?

The RS-232 port is a 9-pin serial connector which enables software control of connected professional-format videotape players. This is handy because you then have the ability to use Media Express (or whatever software you're using to capture from tape) to control the deck completely. I use it to create a batch capture list of in and out points, plus the addition of metadata which is inserted into the header file as it's being captured. Once the list has been created and saved, Media Express will then allow you to commence the capture process, prompting you to insert the relevant tape in each case.
