Record Start/Stop in Media Express

PostFri Aug 24, 2012 7:53 am

Hi,

I am using a setup of the Ultrastudio 3D with my Sony F3 to capture uncompressed 4:4:4 video. First of all I'd love to capture in ProRes 4444, which is obviously not possible atm.

But my biggest request is to have a capture start/stop on TC run in Media Express, so my 4:4:4 uncompressed captures match the XDCAM files recorded in camera. This would also eliminate the need to have someone start the record manually in Media Express, as the DOP just needs to push record on the camera.

Here is my setup running Scopebox - which cant do start/stop either.

I've always hoped for a deck emulation mode in Media Express to allow any device to control it over RS422. This wouldn't be too much harder to do.

However, for less than the cost of that system, you could put an AJA KiPro Quad on the back of the camera and have a completely mobile, non-tethered ProRes4444 capture.

Yes, but the Quad is not available yet and I still see some advantages in my recording solution:
    • Option to capture uncompressed
    • Up to 12 TB storage integrated - (you need to offload the Quad SSDs somewhere)
    • Integrated monitor with LUT and LiveGrade via HDLink
    • Scopes and Histograms via Scopebox
    • FCP, Avid, etc. integrated
    • etc.

The two big disadvantages are that it has to be power connected (but I have 20 min failsave power via integrated USV) and it is bulky and heavy. For studio work no disadvantages at all to my eyes.
