Is GPU Ram Additive? Running Resolve Full License and CUBIX

PostThu Mar 13, 2014 2:29 pm

Hi there,

My colleague just got his BMPC4K and with it a full Da Vinci Resolve license.

We have a cubix Desktop Series II expander at the studio and are now looking into what GPUs to populate it with.

First and foremost I totally respect that the configuration guide is gospel and I am very well acquainted with it. At this point however spending an additional $2000 on a pair of Titans/780 Blacks is unfortunately not an option for us so were are looking for lower priced options.

Regarding the consistent BMD staff recommendations to go with the most GPU Ram possible, here is the simple question:

Is GPU Ram Additive when multiple GPUS are installed in a CUBIX and run with a Licensed version of Resolve?
(Not Lite!)

For example, I currently own two HD 5770 mac editions, each with 1 GB Ram. Will Resolve recognize these in a CUBIX as having 2GB of Ram available? This is in respect to recommendations I have read on these and other forums suggesting 2GB VRAM minimum for working with 4K files.

Thanks much for any insight into this.

The 2GB as MINIMUM For higher than HD "advice" is outdated. 2GB is now the minimum for HD in Resolve 10.

To answer your question. No, it's not "additive". Each card must have it's own ram.

I am running two Quadro cards on Cubix Expander 4 to two CRT's on Slot 2.
Slot 4 has a Quadro K5000 which is registered for renders.

It is important to make sure the computer monitors have enough memory, the more the merrier, that's a fact. Cheers.

Thanks J_Salvo, clarification on that very much appreciated.

Hi, when we discuss GPUs and their ram, its as Juan stated. The specs are per GPU. The GPU use is additive so adding more GPUs increases performance but each GPU has to stand on its own merits. This is why you also should have matching GPUs in your image processing group, or at least similar family/performance/spec GPUs.

Using a fast GPU with 4GB ram and a second slower with 2GB means the system has a mostly wasted GPU waiting for the slow 2GB system.. and the 2GB ram GPU card will dictate the resolution and other processes that are possible.

If in doubt, please refer to the config guides.

Yes, and maybe the kind fella can have a peek at GPU Shark which to a point might enlighten him as well.
There is so much on this sight historically from me and many other on this subject..
cheers.

Hi all.
And what about the ¨Use display GPU for compute¨?
Is possible to use a lower GPU for GUI (example gtx 770) to help comptue a bigger GPU cart (Titan), or is also a bottleneck?
GTX 770, GTX Titan Red Rocket, i7 4770k 3.9Ghz OSX 10.9.1 In Hackintosh Gigabyte Motherboard GA-Z87X-OC Force .
