The New iMac (late 2012)

I guess there are few people besides me thinking how does the new 27-inch iMac do running Resolve, so I pop the question. How do you think it'll do now that it has the NVIDIA graphics again?

It looks like Apple is trying to get back into the media race with providing CUDA straight out of the box. They've made a few mistakes over the past few months that has divided the population, but now that their hardware is coming natively with nVidia cards, we can start to expect seeing more people support their editing decisions on the iMac platform- especially with Adobe Premiere and After Effects.

As for Resolve, I imagine it'll run with no problems. Whether or not it'll be an effective and real-time platform for grading remains to be seen; maybe only for SD/HD workflows since it only has one internal hard drive and limited RAM. You can only fit so much into that thin of a case.

Will the 2GB card you can upgrade to in the 27 inch iMac be able to do noise reduction?

If you have the full version of Resolve, then the NVIDIA GPU in the new iMac's should allow noise reduction to work. It may not work very fast. NR is very GPU intensive.

Do you have any insight into the specifications of the iMac's high-end GPU, the GTX 680MX? I can see the specs for the GTX 680M on NVIDIA's web site but not the 680MX. Is it just a faster clock speed or did they add more cores? Perhaps in a couple of months you'll have tested it and updated the configuration guide. Thanks for any update, Dwaine.

Updated: NVIDIA has posted the description of the new 680MX, but there's no certainty Apple's implementation will match these specs; here's the specs today:

Its frustrating for us all that Apple have announced these new machines and yet they dont seem to be hitting our shelves until late December.

Once we have them in you can be sure we'll be running tests with Resolve, as I'm sure the development team in Singpore will be too. They may of had a model to test with for certification, but I'm not sure if production models are even rolling off the line yet...usually if Apple can ship something on launch day it arrives wrapped up the next day in the warehouse!
