5k red workflow help?

PostFri May 23, 2014 10:13 pm

We just finished shooting our film on EPIC 5k
We will be finishing in 2k

My resolve suite is unable to playback 5k files with the Titan graphics card. This may be a limitation of our raid drive speed.

1. What is the best workflow to get the timeline from Premiere into Resolve?
2. Work in with the files in 2k raw (no metadata applied) (this way if we ever want to go back to the 5k - the colour grades should be able to pass over).

Any suggestions are graciously accepted.

Thank you!

It's not your drive speed. I play back 5k in real time off my client's FW800 drive (1/2 res good), and I have an older GTX 570 with 2.5GB. I do have a 12 core Mac Pro though—what is your system? My suggestion is to set your timeline to HD, Then change it to 2k when you render.

Try (half res good) in the debayer option and 2k timeline: dies it work?

Hey,

Thanks for the ideas.
Tried a 1920x1080 timeline.
Set res to 1/2 (good.)
Playback is around 15fps.
If I do 1/8th I can get 24fps (4-5 serial nodes).

Any other suggestions? Screen caps of your settings?
Baffled that I can get the playback faster. Considering the feedback you guys have given.

You didn't answer the question about your other system specs.

CPU is very important, I've also a 12 Core Mac Pro and a GTX 680 and I get realtime
with half res good up with a few nodes (can't remember how much exactly).

Looks like the CPU is your bottleneck. From what I experience and read from others, 12 cores seems to be necessary to get realtime playback without RED Rocket with 5K files (at least with half res good).

You can still do the job at 1/4 and do single frames if there is a question about sharpness, even if it is not ideal. The up the rez for the final render

Red r3d decode needs both CPU and GPU. Dual quad/six core or single 8/12 and GPU with 4GB ram req.
