Can't grab with Studio 4K under Ubuntu

PostTue Jul 29, 2014 2:14 pm

I've just received new Studio 4K and swap it with Intencity Pro under Ubuntu 14.04 and latest Debian.
Turns out I can't grab any video from component, sdi or hdmi input ports with new card. :(
Here is dmesg lines that I suppose is matter:

[ 6.592911] blackmagic_io: module license 'Proprietary' taints kernel.
[ 6.592915] Disabling lock debugging due to kernel taint
[ 6.593669] BlackmagicIO: Driver version 10.1.1a26 loading

[ 6.594797] BlackmagicIO: Enabled device "DeckLink Studio 4K" (19482621,480200) FW Date: 04-29 14:16

[ 341.880228] blackmagic: Loading driver (version: 10.1.1a26)
[ 373.538996] Disable Video Input: Timed out waiting for frames to be released

I've tried 10.1.3 beta also without luck.
Just in case here is my hw layout:

Re: Can't grab with Studio 4K under Ubuntu

I have a similar problem with my DeckLink SDI 4K: it will output OK, but no input is ever captured. I have tried both the 10.1.1 and 10.1.3 Beta drivers. By contrast, my older DeckLink SDI works perfectly.

The last I heard, from Blackmagic Developer Support on 7th July, was that they were unable to reproduce the problem.

After some experimenting my feeling is that there is a bug in the blackmagic-io.ko driver, which is used for the 4K card. However without some indication from the driver that it is receiving, dropping, queuing, or delivering video frames to the software, there is not much more I can do to diagnose the problem.

Ok. Good to know I am not alone here.
I also can add that on one of motherboards (Intel 81 chipset) I've tried newly acquired Studio 4K card, it is 50-50% chance of not detecting card complitely. lspci can't even find it on a bus. After reboot it is back into system. Another reboot and again no card detected.

I also have the problem of the system not detecting the card sometimes. Fortunately Blackmagic Developer Support were able to reproduce that problem:
We managed to reproduce the issue where a DeckLink SDI 4k is not always detected by the system (Gigabyte X79 UD3 motherboard, Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit, DesktopVideo 10.1.1).
We are tracking it as bug #8472.

So hopefully a fix is forthcoming.

In my case with card not present inside lspci output only firmware update probably will help. Or maybe something wrong around linux kernel pci bus handling. There is possible situation with driver leaving card in a bad state during system shutdown so after soft reset it prevents from proper functioning but I think it is unlikely.
Worst case scenario if there is a problem in hardware. Will keep my fingers crossed for avoiding the last one.
Another question: Should I post some mails to support or creating thread on forum is enough to create some motion inside BlackMagic?

Hi Alexander,

While we do have some of the support team that jump on occasionally, these forums are mainly built around community support rather than directly from us. You're more than welcome to call/email us directly and start a support ticket so that we can work on getting you some sort of result on this.

Got the same problem under CentOS 6.5 with either SDI or HDMI input. The card is properly detected but times out while waiting for a frame. I'm using a Sony PXW-Z100 as input, the same card was able to capture correctly in Windows with 1080i input.

Just noticed there's a 10.1.4 update, took it and I got a working capture at last!

Card detection issues aside (since looks like OP's card was detected, just couldn't capture), I've also had the problem of not being able to capture any input with a new 4K card (Extreme rather than Studio). I swapped the card to another slot and all is OK now - I'm able to see UHD live from a camera in both Media Express and my own capture & preview app.

You are lucky one :) Can you supply some info on the system you use. Kernel version, motherboard name. I've already spotted you are using DeckLink 4K Extreme card.
I've grabbed new 10.1.4 drivers. Same thing:

I even tried to change slots on motherboard. No luck either.
In response for support ticket Matthew propose to contact development team.
I've forwarded my ticket message with additional info a week ago. No response yet.

And some additional info. Just spotted command in driver changelog. I suppose it can helps with missing card after boot.
Code: Select all
echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/rescan

Re: Can't grab with Studio 4K under Ubuntu

I've tried everything. Different workstations, different types of input, different Linuxes, and I've even install Windows 8.1 but I can't grab anything from my DeckLink Studio 4K. Black capture screen without frames and "no signal" error is all I've got. IntensityPro works fine for me. Is there anything I can miss here in comparison to Intensity Pro? Is there something special, some trick to do before start grabbing from a DeckLink Studio 4K? Can it be a broken card?

Maybe it's the input signal that isn't totally compatible? I know I struggled with this and finally got something reliable out of a Brix HDMI output converted to SDI 4K.

My studio 4K card doesn't even show up in 'lspci'.
I have used many BM capture cards over the years, but this is a first ;-(

Somehow my card start working for me now. Nothing really changed, it just start working. I suppose many different issues was preventing me from getting a single frame. And once I've been able to grab simple composite signal I slowly moving forward been able to get component HD from any other sources I have. Not checked HDMI through.

Just found 10.3.x series driver for Linux can't grab 720p50 over component with Studio 4K. Checked it twice. Different 10.2.x driver and grabbing works. 10.3.0 or 10.3.1 and no frames, MediaExpress hangs. Also in the 10.2.3 section for Linux wrong download link for 10.2.2 version drivers.
