Any AMD motherboard support...

I just upgraded my PC and I've got the AMD FX-8150 8 Core Processor witch is an AM3+ slot. Are there any motherboards for this processor that support the Black Magic Intensity Shuttle USB 3.0? I bought the device, without doing my research so the only person I can be upset with is me, and I'd really like to use it. I did see the Asus Crosshair IV worked with the intensity shuttle, but that motherboard is only an AM3 socket and won't fit my processor. I also understand that if your USB 3.0 is on the south bridge, as is mine, that's a no-no.

I've had little to no luck finding a motherboard that will work and I'd rather not have to buy a new Mobo and processor, but as a last resort, I'm looking into it. I beg you Black Magic forums, you're my only hope!

System Specs:

Processor: AMD FX-8150
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 990FX
Graphics Card: GeForce 660 Ti ~ 2gig
Ram: 16gigs DDR3

If you don't mind using a PCIe 1x slot try this add in out:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6815256004
Uses a NEC USB 3 chipset so its a good bet for playing well with the shuttle, and has the 19 pin FP connector, handy if your case has front panel usb 3

If this were a simple and cheap fix, I will most definitely go for it and purchase this card right away. But to my understanding, you have to have an intel based (x58 or something like that) computer to use an expansion card like that. If I'm wrong in thinking that, let me know because if there's a chance that card will work, I'll buy it.

And thanks for the reply.

I think some of the tech support staff said that the brand of USB 3 controller made difference, since they got the device running on some Z77 boards and maybe a X79 board (correct me if I'm wrong). Basically from what I read, USB 3 ports driven by Fresco Logic and NEC controllers had the better chances of working with the shuttle and Asmedia controllers (like the one on my Asus P6X58-E WS) don't want to work with the shuttle.

Its your call if you want to replace your platform but I would try the Silverstone card first since its the cheapest option and it has the NEC controller which the shuttle seems play nice with more often then not. If that doesn't work out by all means change your platform but keep in mind unless you buy in to the LGA 2011 platform you may want to hold off till LGA 1150 is replaced since 1156 is a dead socket walking at this time.

This is why I'm still finicky on buying an expansion card:

Yes! On the Windows platform, you can use Blackmagic Design's USB 3.0 products with a P55 or X58 series motherboard which has been fitted with a USB 3.0 PCI Express expansion card. USB 3.0 expansion cards are available for around US$30.

If that is old information and no longer applies, because I know they're up to x79, then let me know. I can't seem to find a definitive answer and I don't want to spend money on something that has a higher chance of not working than working.

Fair enough. I have an AM2 4200 X2 based system, I'll try sticking my ASUS US36 (since machines that old won't have USB 3) in that machine and see if it works.

Update:
After cleaning the cobwebs out of this old AM2 system (32bit with Windows Vista and the 9.6.8 driver) it does indeed work with the shuttle

So basically even on an 32bit AM2 system (which isn't even supported according to BM's online documation) as long as you have a NEC/Renesas USB 3 controller (which that Silverstone card I linked uses) you should have good chance that the Shuttle will play nice on your system. If I got shuttle working on AM2 I have little reason to doubt an AM3 board + NEC/Renesas USB 3 controller will work with the shuttle.

Hope this helps.

I really appreciate you testing that out. That's awesome that it works! I've already purchased the USB 3.0 card you linked and I'll be back to let you know how I fair with it. Thanks again.

I had that same processor back in the day.

I've got 3 USB 3.0 controllers and I get this message for each and everyone of them when I connect the BMI Shuttle to either one. Each has the most recent driver installed. I've tried several variations in the install; only having the NEC/Renesas driver, only Frescologic driver and I know it won't work with the Etron driver. So, I'm not sure what's happening here. I've messed with all the power options I can regarding my PCIe slots and nothing... The BMI Shuttle installs just fine and is recognized by the system, but I can't use it. The Black Magic Control Panel is all grayed out. I've also tried it in both Windows 7 and Windows 8. Nothing.

So the problem I was having before, about connecting the BMI Shuttle to a super speed usb3.0 is no longer an issue, that message doesn't pop up. THe problem I'm having now is apparently with the new USB 3.0 card I bought (the one that was recommended to me in this thread) is that the Host Controller won't install. When I use the Renesas Host Controller Utility to check my driver and firmware version, I get a message that says: USB 3.0 Host Controller not found.

When I try to install the host controller I get from stationdrivers.com, it says the same thing, that the host controller can't be found. Anyone know of any solutions to this?

also, the BMI shuttle usb 3.0 installs on my system just fine, I just can't use it. I'm thinking it's a problem with this host controller business.

If you can't see the USB card from the Renesas Host Controller Utility, I've found that to be caused by having the wrong drivers installed. The 720200 and 720200A chip USB3 cards require different drivers to be installed. Look at the chip on the USB card / motherboard to get it right.

My problem is that having sorted all that, the (secondhand) shuttle appears and disappears repeatedly every few seconds from the Device Manager with a M5A99X (AMD) motherboard. Two USB3 cards do the same. So I'm left not knowing whether AMD motherboard incompatibility is the issue, or if the device itself is defective.

Anyone else had any luck with AMD motherboards?

Colin

Hi Cozen,

As you said in your post. You upgraded you PC with:

Processor: AMD FX-8150
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 990FX
Graphics Card: GeForce 660 Ti ~ 2gig
Ram: 16gigs DDR3
and special software to take computer backup.

I would say go with i3, i5, i8 process specially with Dell brand. I am using it. It's good.

I would disagree, Dell machines are notorious for not working with BM cards
