That's ridiculous, isn't it ?

Mine will probably come back with the same problem.
I'm wondering how long will it take for Blackmagic to come clean about this swindle.

I have no IDEA who and why released this product! Yet, this case deserves special media attention as UltraStudio Mini Recorder is simply not working properly!

Black Magic, should provide customers with a list of tested hardware! For now, major Canon and Nikon DSLR cameras with standardized HDMI protocol implementation DO NOT WORK!

I am upset, and disappointed. I was expecting more stringent testing from Black Magic. Quality control for this product seems not to be present in their work pipeline!

I am also having the same black screen issue. The device is detected and I have the 9.7 driver and am running Mac OSX 10.7.5. Should I just return this device? Does anyone have any recommendations on another HDMI to Thunderbolt screen capture product that actually works? Does the Intensity Extreme work without issue?

Hi Jim,

I returned my mini recorder – but I'm still waiting for decision.
I got Intensity Extreme instead – works very well.

I´m new to this forum.
I have 2 Ultra video recorders connected to a 15" retina Macbook 10.8.2

HDMI :
I have tested Panasonic GH2 - Doesn´t work
Canon Legria HFM36 - Doesn´t work
5D mark3 - Doesn´t work

BUT

2 SONY PMW-EX1 using SDI works like a charm

I tried the 9.7 driver without success.

Anyone knows if/When this will be fixed.

HDCP is a good guess - but my feeling is the issue is more POS - I am having a no video showing when trying to capture HDMI via a brand new retina macbook pro and thunderbolt - get no video - tried multiple sources. Thought maybe HDCP - but i just hooked up a universal HDMI signal generator with no HDCP and ran standard 720p to the Mini Recorder - and nada - rebooted, closed out, reconnected - BS. Ill try the SDI connection once i find my AJA HDMI to SDI adapter - why are you all selling this device Blackmagic?

Thought I would add this. I just bought the Ultrastudio Recorder with Thunderbolt and could not get the HDMI to work with my Pano Hmc150, Canon 7d or Canon Vixia s100 with any of the progressive settings. When I switched my Hmc150 to record in 1080i 59.97 it worked same with the s100. The Canon 7d had to be switched to 720p 60fps to work. I tested it in Media Express and Premiere Pro CS6. Here are screen shots of my system. remember to make sure that all settings match, camera, software and system prefs.

Thanks for the info. I'm on the fence on whether to try another one of their products after a tech support call. They told me that if it did not work with the Mini Recorder it wouldn't work with the other products either. He said that it should work, and that the recorder may be defective. I chose to believe that it just will not work after seeing all of the headaches everyone else has been having. What is defective is Black Magic's testing process.

If you own a Zoom Q3 do not purchase this product. After hours of trying and a few emails back and forth and a tech support call it was determined that this product will not work with Zoom Q3 using the HDMI input.

Could someone from BMD please give me an indication why my brand new Ultra Studio Mini Recorder with the latest version of Desktop Video 9.7.1 for Macintosh only outputs BLACK to Media Express?
I am using HDMI out of a Sony NEX VG10E to my recorder then Thunderbolt to the latest MacBookPro Retina.
I really need a fix urgently as I have promised a client uncompressed 10 bit pictures.

I've thought of a solution don't know if it would work or not. Also could anyone confirm if they have tried this at their end.
1. Analog video to hdmi converter
2. Hdmi out of the converter into mini recorder

Pls update if anyone has tried this setup ?

I'm considering to try this if no one else has done it..

I have tested all my HDMI devices and I cannot get a single image out of any one of them:

I tested:
iPad 3
iPhone 5
Canon 60D
GoPro 2
Yamaha VR771

Is the HDMI slot wired at all? I feel fooled.

I found that the only setting the HDMI works with on my HMC150 is 60i fps and on my Canon 7d 60p fps.
Make sure all setting are the same in your editing software and camera. I am working on Macbook Pro, Premiere Pro CS6 and Final Cut 7. Hope this helps

Hey Guys

Im new to the forum and new to Black Magic Products. I had the same problem with the Mini recorder as many of you guys! My problem is with the Nikon D800 clean HDMI out. BUT guess what? I got it working after many hours of trial and error + alot of webdiggin'

I happy 2 share how to make it work for this Camera :-)

First setup you Nikon D800/D800e EXACTLY As this guide for the Atomos
http://atomos.activehosted.com/kb/artic ... nd-ninja-2

Next just "copy" setting as pictured (this example is for 30 frames 1920x1080 ONLY, then you change camera settings you MUST change capture settings as-well)

Hey Forumers,
So I have a major issue here:
I just redid (uninstalled+reinstalled successfully) Desktop Video 9.7.1 .
I plug in the UltraStudio Mini Recorder to my mid 2010 27' iMac running Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and it does NOT show up in the system preferences desktop video pane, Media express software (no device connected), or the system profiler ( Thunderbolt: No hardware was found ) ?!?!?!

But when I plug it into my macbook pro (15' early 2011) running desktop video 9.7.1 on Lion 10.7.5 it works with no problems....

I need a fix for this as soon as possible please....

Any one have any suggestions?
BM employee's: is there a new driver package coming soon to fix this?

PLEASE HALP!!

Hello,
for a video installation, I'm planning to buy a Mac Mini Thunderbolt, a Sony HDR-CX410 and a BlackMagic UltraStudio Mini Recorder.
I want to record both audio and video streams via HDMI in 1080i50 (or 1080p25).

What I read here makes me anxious.
Do you think my workflow could work without issues ?

Thanks

I have the panasonic hdc-sd900

I was having problems - getting nothing but black screen, I called Jigsaw 24 for help and downloaded an old driver 9.6.8.

Then deleted it and downloaded the new one 9.7.3

It installed a firmware update.

The settings on the Camera are HDMI resolution 1080i
then I selected HE1920

system preferences on the mac has a blackmagic setting - so I clicked HDMI input

Blackmagic Media Express settings 1080i 50

Flash media live encoder the same.

Hey presto. It worked after hours pulling my hair out

So pretty much what it tells you to do in the manual, set the BM control panel to your input source and source resolution/framerate and set your capture software to the same

Pretty much - however, I had tried that before and had no luck.
The turning point was downloading an earlier driver, running it for a few tests, and then deleting it, installing the new one, which then allowed a firmware update.

That seemed to do it when I got the settings right

Hi all,

This is my first post :)

I've purchased yesterday and test this evening the Mini Recorder with the Nikon D600 and all is working like a charm.

I'm on Mac Mini (Late 2012) - Mountain Lion 10.8.4. I've downloaded and installed the latest Desktop Video 9.7.5. Let the software update the firmware and reconnect the Mini Recorder.

Be sure that all the chain have the same setting. If the camera is on 1080p@24 you have to set Media Express on 1080p@23.976. I've recorded YUV 4:2:2 10bit succesfully without issue :)

Hope could help !

Guido

Short update :)

If after have switch off live view mode on camera and back on you're in trouble to connect again it, this is a workaround.

Go to System Preferences -> BlackMagic Design -> Set Input to SDI ... close and reopen switch again to HDMI :)

Have tried for several days to get this to work unsuccessfully. Blackmagic support does not respond, main Blackmagic resellers do not know about issue or how to resolve it so have no alternative but to return unit.

Was trying to run this using a Canon M52 and Canon HF10 both of which have HDMI out at 1080i60 or 1080p30 or 24 (all of which are supported by the recorder according to settings in the Black Magic media Express software), together with 2012 Macbook pro running OSX 10.8.4.

Have uninstalled and reinstalled Black Magic latest software several times.

Black magic software shows the ultra recorder but no video/audio. Flash Media Live Encoder shows audio coming through but no video. Many, many people report same issue with this product.

I did submit a support ticket a couple of days ago. However, I just managed to figure it out and get it working.... the camera says it outputs only in 1080i60 and 1080p30 and p24. None of these settings work in the black magic settings. However setting black magic to 1080i 59.94 does work for 1080i60 and and 1080p30 and p24 in the camera and is the only setting it works on with the black magic software.

If setting the mini recorder to 1080i 59.94 makes it work for all 3 camera settings then that would imply the camera is always outputting 1080i 59.94 no matter what you have the camera set to, this is not unusual, neither is the fact that the camera manufacturer saying it's 60 when it's actually 59.94

I just got off the phone with support and also got my Canon Mark III to work after setting the Project Video Format in Media Express to 1080i 59.94.

The troubleshooting process that would be recommended for anyone else having issues with their camera and the mini recorder would be to connect the camera to a TV and press info on their remote. Info will tell you what signal the TV is receiving from the camera (e.g. the even though the camera was set to 720p 60fps, the HDMI out to the TV was 1080i).

My Computer is a Macbook Pro Laptop Mid 2011 i7 2.2ghz running OSX 10.8.4, the camera is a Canon Mark III with the 1.2.1 firmware (which outputs a clean HDMI), and Desktop Video 9.7.7.

As a side note, the 1080i setting also allows me to use the Canon Mark III inside Wirecast to be able stream the Mark III as my webcam.

I managed to get my canon 60D workign with the mini recorder by using the same settings as the previous poster with his 7D. I have my camera set to record at 720 60p and my capture settings in wire cast are set to 1080i 59.94. I was having trouble until I changed my desktop video preferences in my system preferences panel (on a mac) my input was set to "SDI audio & video" and had to be switched to "HDMI audio & video." everything works now. I cleared the display menus with magic lantern and re-scaled the image in wire-cast and now I have my 60d ready for live streaming.

im on desktop video 9.7
wirecast 4.3.1
mountain lion 10.8.5

I managed to get my canon 5d mark iii working today by doing the most recent firmware update. Canon firmware version. 1.2.3, which go figure, now makes it possible to support HDMI output a lot better.

I set my camera settings to hdmi out 24fps, mirror controls, and have the HDMI remote control setting "on" and my dreaded blank black screen lit up with a nice crystal clear image.

Today I was very disappointed to find out that the ultrastudio mini recorder does not work with FaceTime. It works with Skype after few tweaks and changes to the xml but not FaceTime. I emailed the support and after 3 days no reply (thanks BMD) i called them and the guy from support said why would you use it for FaceTime i told him you have stated in your website that its for live streaming he said NO WE HAVENT ( BMD i really encourage you to inform your support team of the content on your website, its really embarrassing) anyhow to cut the long story short he said it don't work with FaceTime and only the programs in the read me file which was only adobe, avid and Final Cut however out of tests i have done it does work with Skype and wirecast and lifestream and other softwares which i haven't tested.
so do not bother to get this device if you hoping to use with FaceTime, such a big disappointment Blackmagic.

So System Preferences>Black Magic Design>And its this page that is all greyed out...

Cables are fine, the computer recognizes the mini-recorder but can't set inputs.

And the other program I'm using Boinx doesn't let me choose the mini-recorders signal..

Please help if anyone has an answer or other things I could try out it would be very appreciated.

Thanks a lot

You do have the device plugged into a Thunderbolt port and not a Mini Display port correct? This could be the reason why it's not being recognized and the menu greyed out.

Hi all, following this thread, good read!

I'm trying to connect an NX500 to Ultrastudio Mini Recorder, and like others have lost some hair over it. I've got the UMR working well with GoPro Hero3+, as well as an old Sony HC9 consumer camera. You really have to get the setting on the computer side right (in my case MBP 15" late 2013 model). It needs to be set to the native output of the camera, sometimes regardless of your video settings I found. ie the Sony only works when the Media Express project setting (or whatever software you're using) is set to 1080i50.
The Gopro's were working fine at 1080p25.

With the NX500, I was getting nothing! Until reading the forum and a post above mentioned some cameras working only at 720p. I set the HDMI Output of the NX to 720p, then the Media Express Project setting to 720p50, voila, there's a picture! Firstly there's a warning message on both the camera's screen and the capture window saying 'Shooting functions are supported only when the HDMI output is set to 1080p.'
So you can't get a live feed while in photo mode, but switch to video mode and it kind of half works!!
Half works in that you get the OSD, but no picture on either the camera or the capture window...

The ME project setting of 720p works when camera is set to PAL at 720p50, or NTSC 720p60, but when 60p you need to set the ME project to 720p59.97
Also works when the HDMI is set to lower resolutions. Just not 1080...
Any suggestions?

Maybe something to do with NX using h265 codec? Long shot...

Re: UltraStudio Mini Recorder not working

PostPosted: Thu Oct 22, 2015 5:32 pm
by Adam Simmons
Nothing to do with the codec as the output through HDMI won't be h265. The problem will be the output frame-rate @1080p. The camera is probably outputting 1080p60 which the UMR doesn't support

Not at 1080p50/60. If you check the tech specs page it tells you what formats it supports.
