Reel naming from EDLs

PostWed Nov 28, 2012 10:31 pm

I'm having a problem getting reel names from my EDL.
In the Conform window, I've set up the parameters for extracting the reel names from file path names, which works perfectly in the media pool, but it doesn't seem to apply to the EDL itself.

The reel names in the media pool are the file names themselves, which I extracted using a path name pattern, however, the EDL doesn't find these file names. Instead, it uses the entire path from the EDL as the reel name. The result in the Media Pool looks like this: MVI_0204. The result in the EDL window looks like this: F:/RawFootage/..../MVI_0204.

I can't figure out how to get these two things to match.

If you open the EDL in a text editor, what does it show for REEL? And where is that REEL shown? For example:

001 MVI_204 12:00:00:00 12:01:00:00 01:00:00:00 01:01:00:00

Where a proper EDL such as the above is:

event# REEL TIMECODE IN TIMECODE OUT RECORD IN RECORD OUT

Sometimes the REEL can also be a comment for every event such as:

001 MVI_204 12:00:00:00 12:01:00:00 01:00:00:00 01:01:00:00
* MVI_204

If those match with out the UNC path, then you should get a match. What system generated the EDL?

I ignored the REELs in the EDL (shot on a Canon 7D - each reel is 9999). The EDL came from SpeedEdit. I'm drawing the reel names from the comments in the EDL which list the file path and the timecode.

Duplicate your EDL and open it in a text editor and edit out the UNC path from the comments. The REEL function is not expecting to see the whole path in the comments and seems to be assuming that entire line is the reel after the asterix (*). Try the first few events after editing and see if it links.
